Show Community Profile Millard Contractor’s workshop Volunteer members of the Board of Directors of Central Utah Food Sharing Inc Millard County Branch met recently to discuss plans and goals of the group The brief meeting was held at the emergency food bank 165 West 100 South Delta Thursday Feb 2 Among items on the agenda: - Names of possible candidates who may be asked to serve on the local and regional CUFS governing board were listed There are now eight volunteers who staff the food bank which openThe need for more ed in November volunteers is expected to become more acute as summer approaches It was decided to wait until much later in the year before discussing fundraisers Currently the program is solvent Expenses are minimal Among groups helpful in sustaining CUFS financially are the Fillmore Lions Delta Kiwanis Delta Rotary and the Presbyterian and Catholic churches Area boy scouts have been helpful with the recent “Scouting for Food" program and other volunteer work Several other groups and individuals in the have also been instrumental CUFS effort to meet the emergency food needs of Millard County residents Volunteer Barbara Faigle is looking for help from a local representative in attending monthly board meetings which are held in Richfield Specifically interest in the program is being solicited from the east county area cluding Scipio and Kanosh Also a need for several pieces of furniture at the food bank a sofa chairs and tables was discussed It was decided the board should meet "at least quarterly” or more often as - a costume Company builds kids self-estee- m by Ken Rand Sunshine Generation “an children's pet forming group like no olher” according lo a promotional brochure seas staited by a Layton woman and now has branches all over the world including China Delta and I illmore In 1979 Nancie Nalder was looking for a childien’s performing group to teach “total showmanship” to her own children I mding none that satisfied she created her own “All children have talent that can be developed" Nalder sa$ But the concept goes beyond talent Regular public performances help develop and the real focus of the business “A child’s selfesteem grows as he realizes he has something wholesome and worthwhile to contribute” Nalder says “Perforgrow ming talents and together and compliment each other in the Sunshine Generation” Six major areas of development are stressed: musical theater singing dance voice culture music theory and most importantly showmanship ' No tryouts or auditions are required to join yet everyone performs Boys and girls are grouped by ages “We start with three year olds and go all the way through the teen years” Delta Sunshine Generation Director Denise Jaramillo says “We have one song the finale w here all the different age groups work together" she says "but each age group does different for their songs that are appropriate age” In Delta there are almost 40 kids participating Tire Delta group is mostly girls In f illmore it’s mostly boys “In the cities it’s about even” Denise says Director of Sunshine Generation in I illmore is Serena Christensen Kids practice once a week for an hour and perform m their attractive bright yellow and oiange costumes once a month Where do they perform? “Everywhere” Denise says “ke go to Extended Care we’ve gone to craft we go to bazaars This summer lagoon kke go to local places churchs Ue try to stay locally so there’s not a lot of expense for the families to go out That way they get the benefit of the performances right here” Next performance is Saturdav March 18 at the M E Bird Center in Delta as part of the St John Bosco craft Catholic bazaar Shows are always free The show numbers are musical that do dances theater dances Ue go with singing” Denise savs “There's jazz steps tap steps and dance sieps they sing with” Uniforms songs and dances are the same in all (he groups all over the world A family moving from Delta to Salt Lake City Las Vegas or even Tiawan Canada or Australia can pack their kid’s old costume and never miss a step and Nalder provides developing music selection training marketing and choreography for the franchise business Merrilee Webb is the music arranger Uniforms are by California Sunshine Costumes In Delia Denise got involved through one of her children Lara who joined at age three At the time the local program was directed by Susan Hinkie “Susan needed some help as a teacher" Denise says “Since she’s asked me to rake over” Now Susan helps Denise “So we've kind of switched roles bur she is in it as much as I am still" Denise studied dance and singing Luther College in while attending Desorah Iowa She is married and has Her youngest age two three children has not joined Sunshine Generation yet but Lara and Luke are active membets “I got into it because I think this is something a child will use all their life" Denise says “even if they never do sing and dance again Tor Lara when wanted her to get into it I knew that some day she’ll have to get in front of a class and give a report Some day she's going to have to go to a job terview She’s going to have to know bow to handle herself in front of people” Susan says the program has helped the kids learn better by providing them with respect for the learning process “I have had comments from parents saying how they felt it has helped them with their school wotk” she says “It does have to do with discipline not so much the teacher over the child rather the child learning to pay attention to follow directions and to stick to a -
