Gwen Hunter Librarian Fillmore 25 South Kathy Walker V Utah 100 West Thoughts on Agatha Known as one of the greatest mystery writers of all time Agatha Christie has another facet Writing under the name of Mary Westmacott Avenel Books has recently (1986) republished six of these early novels in one volume This volume was recently donated to the library Being an avid Christie fan it immediately went on my reading list Last week due to enforced inactivity the reading began “Giant’s Bread” first in the volume was published in 1930 What a surprise! It’s like something one hopes to read in one sitting but can’t It’s also something demanding thought and pondering as one goes Behind the story is a deep philosophical undercurrent concerning music and “genius” The characters are of course well developed and individual drawn from all the economic classes of England in the early 1900’s The time period is set just previous during and just after World War I and takes place in England Europe Russia and touches America also The book is enticing only if one endemands joys something which attention— not a book for speed skip a thing! Cold Sassy Tree Yes it is a strange name for a book! It is necessary to read several pages before it can be understood but the puzzle is definitely worth it Olive Ann Burns in her first novel has a delightful way of telling a story Her “ear” for Southern dialect is just right She has produced some wonderand fully different characterizations woven them into a family saga which presents some very interesting situations The story is set in rural Georgia in 1906 and told through the mind and eyes of a fourteen year old boy One of the reviews quoted with which we heartily agree is printed in the front of the book This paragraph is quoted from “The Plain Dealer” (Cleveland): “Full of marvelous yarns colorful customs genuine humor and You are going to love COLD pathos Sassy Tree Exuberant funny touching and so full of the sheer joy of living that the amiable exercise of will the make turning pages you feel ten years younger!” New James Michener— “Legacy” This must be the thinnest book ever written by James Michener only three fourths of an inch thick but full of his usual style of succinct presentations afThe story parallels the fair Likely he will write a sequel when the trials are over It is labeled a novel but names names and places and depends on much historical research 1st Monday Art Program Don’t miss the next presentation from the National Gallery of Art April 4 at 7:30 pm in the Multipurpose room “The Eye of Thomas Jefferson” will be presented by Mr Jolley History and art both will be included in this presentation This series has been and will be given the 1st Monday of each month Oct through May for two years — See you in the library — Katrina Hirschi news 4-- H Katrina Hirschi was chosen as a state Ambassador Finalist She will be doing a two month project to recruit members and leaders Katrina has been very involved in and hopes to be able to get others involved as well so that they too many enjoy the many benefits of the program Best of luck to you Katrina! 1988 Utah Volunteer Leaders will meet in Provo Utah for the 1988 State Leadermete Rita Giles April and Lorelei Draper have been selected to act as the Volunteer Representatives for Millard County They will work cooperatively with Margenne Rowley and Larry Campbell Extension Agents to prepare materials and make the necessary plans for the county attend to group Proud Future is the theme of this year’s Leadermete The highlight of the conference will be a Fair on Sharing Saturday April 23 to which all leaders members and alumni are invited The Fair will feature displays and demonstrations of a wide variety of projects There will be workshops and a style revue will climax the day A special part of the Leadermete will be the recognition of outstanding Leaders from across the 'tate For the first time a couple of alumni will be recognized Each county can select one of their volunteer leaders to be honored at the awards banquet One volunteer in the state will be chosen to receive the “Doorknob” Award in recognition of all the doors of opportunity that they have opened for young people the Utah During the Leadermete Volunteers Association will elect new representatives to their Executive Council For more information please contact your County Extension Office Rita and Lorelei need to know by Friday if you plan to attend the April Leadermete Easter Egg Hunt The East Millard Fine Arts Guild held its meeting March 17 1988 in the Millard Fillmore Multipurpose room at 4:00 pm The meeting was conducted by President Tafta Watson Program was Sylvia Huntsman Committee Nancy Horio and Georgia Starley The was arranged by Bonnie program Baugh Millard High School Sterling Scholar Candidate in Literature Sixth grade students from the classes of Mrs White Mr Giles and Mrs Stevens read poems and original stories and were enjoyed by a large group of members and by Katrina Hirschi The Fillmore area Teen Council and Youth City Council are sponsoring an Easter Egg Hunt The Hunt will begin at 10:00 am at the North Park on Saturday April 2 It will be opened to children ages year to 12 years old Please come and support these organizations We’U see ya’ all there!!
