IMPACT Grasshopper and Mormon Cricket Control Project Fillmore Ranger District Millard County USDA Forest Service - Fishlake National Forest The Forest Service in cooperation with Serthe Animal and Plant Health Inspection vice (APHIS) proposes to control grasshoppers and Mormon crickets on the lower elevations of the south east and west portions of the Canyon Mountain Range r Fillmore Ranger District (see Map in c(ix A) T()e objective of (he control project is to reduce the grasshopper and Mormon population which has caused damage to range resources and nearby agricultural croplands for the past three years Two alternatives have been considered: These are: Reduce the grasshopper and Mormon cricket population through the use of both aerial and ground application of appropriate pesticides and control organisms 2 Take no action to control the grasshopper and Mormon cricket populations It is my decision to proceed with the alternative of reducing the cricket and grasshopper populations by aerial application of of bran Sevin spray ground application and the bait impregnated with Sevin use of Nosema locustae bait adjacent to critical stream and camping areas (See Apcricket pendix A) The treatment will be done by trained pesticide applicators working under the direction of APHIS personnel Applications of Eightmile will be made in the vicinity Clay Springs Cascade Bridge Canyon Wildhorse Box Canyon and Hardscrabble No aerial spray applications of Sevin (Carbaryl) will be made within 500 feet of open water or within 500 feet of campers or developed campgrounds Because of these constraints Nosema will be used in sensitive areas with some ground application of bran bait surrounding the sensitive areas There will be 16 ounces of Carbaryl with 4 ounces of diesel applied per acre as an oil spray This constitutes 8 ounces of active gredient per acre This rate is effective in control of cricket populations and poses no threat to human health Carbaryl degrades within two to six weeks Bran bait will only have limited use but will be applied at the rate of 40 lbs acre where applicable in areas that cannot be treated with a spray or where additional protection is required Nosema bran bait will be applied at the rate of 2 lbsacre The effect of Carbaryl on the environment are minimal when compared to the range resource and animal damage caused of Mormon crickets by high densities Reduction in the population density may reduce the food supply available to birds and However there will be no other wildlife effect on wildlife Carbaryl is toxic to insects other than grasshoppers and crickets Thus application of the chemical insects of will reduce populations will be notified Any bee owners in the area can protect their in advance so they resources Both the economic and social consequences of reducing the cricket population are beneficial The no action alternative would allow the range resource to be damaged and the vestment on range improvement projects to be lost for the year The forage loss would the require that livestock be removed from Less food would be allotments early available for big game animals Reduced erosoil in ground cover could also result sion and site deterioration The migration of the crickets at maturity will result in the to nearby damage being done no agricultural crops For these reasons the ADVERTISEMENT FOR
