Also the church building was used as a community building for banquets school dinners etc for many years For the next few years extensive remodeling of the upstairs took place The ceiling was lowered and the sides were enclosed replacing curtains with walls Pews were put in and the large and small wooden chairs were removed A coal furnace took the place of the potbellied stoves which had been in the sanctuary and basement Eventually furnace was installed an The church bell which is now outside dates back to the late 1800s It had originally hung in a Protestant church in Hyrum Utah and held its first spot locally downstairs in the fellowship hall The bell was purchased by the Ladies’ Aide Society from Troy NY and donated to “the Gentiles in Utah” The history of the Delta Community Church continues In August 1985 Warren T Fikejs was called to be the first full time pastor Much of the inchurch’s surrounding property cluding a house that was earmarked for has been sold but the a manse building continues to house a congregation It continues to be exactly what it was built for- -a church Sannes places first in debate Joel Sannes continues to wrestle opponents to the floor with words as he and his partner Alex Ching recently first place honors in the captured Junior Varsity National Debate TourThe event was held at the nament Fairfax George Mason University VA Sannes and Ching debated both sides of the restriction of the First amendment through eight preliminary rounds before sweeping through the finals In reaching first place they defeated such schools as Boston College Cornell Georgetown and the Naval Academy Sannes is a freshman at Arizona State University (ASU) Tempe AZ He is an English major He is currently working towards a Grade Point Average of 40 His introduction to debating came about in his freshman year at Delta High School He and a friend Tim Hurst had signed up for LDS Seminary classes Their questions and actions seemed disruptive and the prinr cipal of the school Mr Lynn stepped in to resolve the matter Figuratively speaking he took the two freshies in tow by the scruff of their necks and walked them to Mr Terry Hansen’s room with the admonition “I’ll put you somewhere where your mouth can do some good” Mr Hansen has Speech and Debate in the high school it was evident that Joel By had indeed been placed where his mouth could do some good Even as a novice he was the one to watch During his tenure at high school Joel earned a reputation of “being hard to beat” in debating circles Time after time he brought home first place honors to his high school and to the area His many friends join in wishing him continued success Dr Ag-Reac- Gary Applegate h women’s workshops There will be two Women’s Workshops held on April 25 One will be held in Delta from 10 am until 2 pm The second will be held the same day in Fillmore from 5 to 9 pm Please watch for locations in next week’s paper The theme of the workshops will be "Happiness is Your Choice” and the keynote speaker will be Dr Gary Applegate Following his presentations there will be workshops which will clude stress management and selfesteem A luncheon will be served in Delta Dr Applegate is a doctoral graduate in Clinical Psychology from Washington State University He holds additional psychology degrees from Loyola University and California State University at Los Angeles In 1970 Dr Applegate began his private practice During his professional career he has worked with the full gamut of psychological aberrations In 1972 he became associated with the Institute for Reality Therapy as a resident faculty member During this time he began to develop his strategy to teach people how to build strong fulfilling successful lifestyles Attend and Support TI LUMBER CHURCH I I & HARDWARE West 705 Materials Building Quality Main Delta West MainJ)elt864-254be"nne"tts” dr iv if in" 215 types of Chicken -
