Show Page 6 - Millard County USPS Tburs Apr 9 1987 i March of Dimes WalkAmerica Gladys Allen Seminar Lillian Stead and John Victor Rogers Golden wedding anniversary John Victor Rogers and Lillian Stead Rogers of Kanosh Utah celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Friday March 27 Rather than have an open house they met with their children and spouses on Saturday March 28 at the Ogden LDS Temple where they attended a temple session Afterward they went to a restaurant in town to eat and visit Their daughter Kathie R Smith of Bountiful tells that Vic and Lillian in a civil wedding were married ceremony by Bishop Albin A Hoglund in Los Angeles California on March 1937 and were sealed in the Salt 27 Lake Temple on October 12 1937 when Vic had vacation time from work Vic was born in Kanosh Utah but went to Los Angeles to find work during the depression He worked several years for the Pacific Fruit Express Lillian was born in Pudsey Yorkshire England and moved with her parents to Los Angeles after they joined the LDS Church Vic and Lillian met while serving as stake missionaries for the church in Hollywood Stake They moved to Kanosh Utah in June 1947 to take over his father’s farm Vic work- - Memorial fund started ed as a farmer bus driver church custodian raised chickens and turkeys and worked at the Fillmore feed mill Lillian worked as a bus driver and a for the US Forest Service when extra money was needed to send children on missions Vic and Lillian raised five children who all served missions for the LDS Church They are David L Rogers Logan UT Lillis Rogers Byers Salt Lake City UT Kathie Rogers Smith Brigham City Utah John S Rogers West Jordan UT and Craig Rogers CA Sunnymead After raising their children Vic and Lillian served two temple missions at the Manti Temple and a proin the Litselyting mission in tle Rock Arkansas Mission In addition to their missions they have served in many other capacities in their wards over the years Vic was ward dark YMMIA president counselor in the bishopric teacher Lillian is best remembered for her work in the music singing choir teaching music groups etc Presently they ar working in the name extraction program doing genealogy work for the church have 21 grandThey presently children and one great grandchild Ph A memorial fund has been started for a shelf (or shelves) honoring Dorothy Paxton The donations can be sent to the Fillmore Library before May Any amount can be accepted: two five ten dollars This is in lieu of flowers or book memorials Easter Egg Hunt Kids! City Lori w ill fly to Puerto Rico on May 11 to compete in the International Science and Engineering Fair This is the third year in a row that Lori has won in Cedar City and competed in the National Science Fairs The children of Otto and Allie Hunter honored their parents for their 59th wedding anniversary last weekend at the Apple Butter Farms Restaurant in Provo All of their children were their except Deck and wife Judy who are still in Mexico on their honeymoon to Cindy Johnson Congratulations and Kristine Dastrup on being chosen as varsity cheerleaders for Millard High School for next year Tom and Denise Lovell have recently returned from a trip to Washington DC They took their four children to after returning from Disneyland Washington Ed and LaVon Shelstead have returned from spending a month in Montana helping their son Gary DeEtte Turner and two girls from Boise Idaho spent last weekend with Louise Bennett during their spring break Bill and Ruth Stevens were weekend Anna Parguests of their daughter sons and family of Brigham City Rose (Stevens) Dickens and two children Holly and Jeffrey moved to Provo last weekend where Rose is studying to be a nurse She will be working at the Utah Valley Hospital as part of her training There will be a combined Priesthood and Relief Society meeting this Sunday in the Chapel at 10:00 am for all adults Special arrangements have been made so as many as possible from the Young Men’s presidency the Young Women’s presidency and the Primary presidency and teachers can attend The Young Men and the Young W'omen will meet in the Relief Society Room Sunday for opening exercises This Sunday will also be Fast Sunday for April due to General Conference last Sunday and Stake Conference the following Sunday April 19 There are occasion They attended the Golden Wedding of Anniversary Lora’s sister Louie and her husband Duncan March 21 This was on Stanley a joyous occasion with all of Lora’s sisters and their spouses in attendance Their brother Joe Barkdall and his wife were unable to attend The sisters besides Lora and Louie are Veola Bryant of St George Helen Stevens of Holden and Julia Jackson of Mapleton The Duncans are ordinance workers at the St George LDS Temple Clem and Lora returned home March 22 On March 23 the Utleys went to Midvale where they attended funeral services for Clem’s brother Reed Utley Clem and his brother Floyd Utley sang a duet and their sister Libby Lambert rendered a vocal solo at the services All of Reed’s and Darlene’s children and grandchildren were in attendance as were all of Reed’s brothers and sisters and Darlene’s sisters and their spouses and many of the nieces and nephews Mrs Jarold (Peggy) Robison took her sister Ruthmary Brower with them to Midvale March 23 to attend funeral services for their Reed Utley husband of their sister Darlene Brower Utley The Robisons stopped in Springville on their way to take another sister Naomi and her husband Ray Fitzgerald with them to the services They report a large crowd attended the beautiful service Darlene has been very faithful in caring for her husband doing everything possible to make him comfortable Mrs Don (llena) Tomkinson had a busy six days beginning March 20 when they traveled to Phoenix Arizona to be present at the missionary testimonial for their foster Lamanite daughter Faun Damon Connie Tomkinson Stratton and her husband Craig and two children of Hurricane also traveled to Phoenix The Tomkinsons report that a large crowd was in attendance which included Faun’s twin sister Fern and her husband their mother Clara Damon and all of her sons and daughters except a daughter who was unable to attend Clara the Tomkinsons were speakers and the missionary Faun Connie offered the closing prayer The family and close friends were guests at a special dinner honoring Faun The Tomkinsons brought Faun with them to Utah They made several stops on the way Then early the morning of March 25 the three went through a session at the Manti Temple It was on to Provo that day where Faun entered MTC prior to her serving an LDS Mission in the England Bristol Mission Don and returned home late that evening tired but happy for the opportunity for their part in helping Faun to reach this goal in her life Pam Freeman and Addison made a business trip for her husband Jerry to Salt Lake City and April 17 wedding Last week Avalon and Agnes Johnson were in Salina on business When they finished they drove on over to Aurora to visit their friends Don and Jean Neilson Don was not home but they had a real nice visit with Jean She asked about all her friends here Mrs Dean Allen were in Orem on business March 31 They took his mother Ruth Allen with them They visited Utah Valley Hospital in Provo where Dean’s and Shirley’s little grandson is in intensive care He has been ill with pneumonia He does show a little Ruth visited with her improvement daughter and family the Royal Hurds in Orem The little grandson’s parents are Danny and LaVon Allen of Elberta Veta Rasmussen has been in Salt Lake City helping her son Grant and his wife Melba with their daughters while the youngest has been in the Grant brought his mother hospital home also his daughter who is now Grant spent last recuperating week working on his farm A big group of his friends from his ward in Salt Lake including his bishop came and helped They were able to accomplish a great deal Connie Stratton (Mrs Craig) and children Cody and Cassadee of spent several days here with her parents Don and llena Tomkinson Connie brought a number of articles of apparel for children which she had made They were very nice and well made Quite a number of ladies from her and other from out of town called March 31 to view and buy She also visited her brother Rodney and his wife Chris Dr Darnell Jones was here over the weekend of March with his wife Yvonne and their children Ben and Juliet The newest member of this ward is Regina Starley daughter of Wayne and Jeanie Starley Regina was baptized a member of the LDS Church March 31 by her Uncle LaVoy Starley at the first ward in Fillmore She was also confirmed an LDS member by Uncle LaVoy with others standing with him Her grandparents Dell and Renee Starley of Fillmore attended as did many other relatives and friends cluding a number from Flowell The missionaries of the Utah Southwest Mission Sister Castillo and Sister Sump have really enjoyed visiting and teaching Regina She has been very faithful attending church meetings here and involved herself in service projects anxious to be of help Congratulations Regina! Sander Anderson and his wife Lucille of Draper divided the past weekend with their sons and wives here: Milo and Ranae Anderson and five children LaDon and wife Janet and All enjoyed having two children grandpa and grandma visit Pam Freeman and son Addison left here early the am of March 27 to travel to Ft Collins Colorado to visit a friend from St Marie Michigan Pam’s home state They encountered some bad weather when they reached day One of the most interesting workshops was given by Augusta Baker an internationally famous She told of her many years in the library field and of her experiences in even with her first story telling disastrous beginning She was determined to master the art and to satisfy Her first years were her supervisor spent in New York City She is indeed now a masterful storyteller Mrs Baker pointed out that there is a difference in “reading” and Her advice was that “storytelling” children should be read to daily from a very young age and have the opportunity to listen to great story tellers whenever possible A second point was that story telling was not the same as it needs acting or giving a monologue to be less active and done without to her) costume (which according distracts from the story Choice Children’s Book Among the donations received at our library lately is one very good book for and about kids It was published in 1974 but was entirely new to me Since it has not won a Newbury or Caldecott Award it was not brought to our attention After reading “Journey for Three” by Isabelle Holland I wish to bring it to your attention and since all of you were once children we are sure you will enjoy the story presented on these short 105 pages It concerns some very courageous orphans and some unique adults who are forced to deal with their situation Try like it Next Art Program We received a call from the National Gallery of Art telling us that our scheduled video on Rembrandt will not be delivered to us for our next proHowever we are able to gram substitute tow short videos from the Profiles In American Art Series To be shown April 13 at 7:30 pm will be “Ed Fraughton Western Sculptor’! detailing his research sketches modeling and working through to the finished statue and “John Stobart: Marine Painter” who concentrates on painting old ships and presents a painting demonstration We will be happy to have all attend Families may want to attend for their Family Home Evening activity The videos will be shown in the Multipurpose room of the 13 7:30 pm These programs are presented at the Library by Mr Doug Jolley of the School Art High Dept and sponsored by the Civic Arts Council along with the library Request for History We recently received a request from a writer in California requesting history of hotels in our area He is searching for materials for a book on this subject dating from 1850 through the second World War We were able to send him a well filled envelope by copying from the Milestones of Millard Everything is Relative published by the Daughters of Utah Pioneers and Stella Day and by using Utah history books In addition we called on Dean Robison for her family history which included knowledge on the Stage Coach Station at Petersburg and Kanosh and also the Territorial State House and the Spinning Wheel Motel We sent some pictures as well We would like to have copies of family or individual histories of the pioneers to put in our new Special Collections Room which is fast nearing Histories of towns in completion Millard County would also be most welcome Please think of making an extra copy to share with others through this new collection when you make copies for your family members We do have a few photocopied histories and also a few bound volumes of family histories Patrons would be surprised at the number of requests we have from people for historical information on general subjects and specific families Story Time We are still holding a special Story Time for young children at 3:30 on Tuesdays If a different time would be more convenient for families of young children please let us know —See you in the Library— Denver so they were guests of friends there Next day they went on the Ft Collins to visit her friend who was visiting a daughter there Surely was a wonderful two day visit catching up on the news of mutual friends in Pam and Addison had a Michigan beautiful day March 30 to travel home It has been a long time since Virgie Ivie’s children Jack and Lisa Higif and children Aaron BenJessica Nathan and Jacqulyn have jamin been to visit her But they arrived the evening of March 28 Lisa’s birthday ' P |
