between recovery is one which and peak performance merits close examination for that relathe depth and tionship determines successful sobriety First of quality of all let me define my terms: Recovery-Tprocess of restoring order stability and rationality to life It requires a recognition of the chemical dependency problems a determination that the consequences of those problems are no longer tolerable and the acknowledgement and acceptance of a set of principles that are capable of restoring some measure of serenity It is a dynamic process constantly changone which coning and developing tinually alters perception Peak Performance-Tapplication of emotional mental and behavioral principles which results in maximum achievement of potential It is the result of being your best of rising above acceptable mediocrity It is directly linked to growth and development in all areas life Sobriety-Tdevelopment of a new lifestyle based on total abstinence It derives its strength from mental emotional and spiritual elements that mature with time and experience It is important to understand these concepts and how they affect each other because without that awareness the depth and quality of sobriety will never fully develop Many chemically dependent people stop drinking and correctly assume that once that basic requirement is met the problems are over the only place that Unfortunately happens is on TV shows and soap operas In real life sobriety is a life a continuing process long process acmarked by specific achievements complishments and periods of growth Successful sobriety is essentially a program of peak performance This term may seem a little unusual at first In the past it was used to refer to being the to athletic achievement best It described those times when Charge ’em for by Jillyn Smith Science Writer Utah State University “Charge ’em for the lice Charge ’em for the mice” sings the innkeeper Thenardier as he totes up the bills in now playing at the “Les Miserables” Palace Theatre in London I just returned from Utah State University’s theatre tour to London behavior and Thenardier’s and song turned my thoughts to vermin Webster’s defines vermin as “small common harmful or disgusting animals (as lice or mice) that are difficult to get rid of” The house where I now live came equipped with Victor mousetraps I saw my first mouse before I started mother was chasing it with a broom Drugstores come equipped with lice combs and shampoos Considering history it is unusual that I saw my first louse on a glass slide in a biology class rather than in its natural habitat on a human or plucked and held between my thumb and forefinger Three kinds of bloodsucking lice afl The crablike and less feet humans common pubic louse has stout legs suited for grasping coarse hairs The more elongated head and body lice are two varieties of the same species They behavior: one differ in their prefers the hairs of the head and the other prefers the seams of clothing history people of all Throughout ranks and positions have been intimately acquainted with these "cooties” and “seam squirrels” The Egyptian priests probably shaved their bodies to keep the lice under everything came together perfectly both physically and mentally But these dynamics are not relevant only to the athlete They pertain to anyone who is striving to grow and develop It is from this point of view that I have applied to the the term peak performance chemically dependent recovering person Sobriety must be viewed on a continuum reaching from the early stages to infinity During the early stages simply staying sober is the main goal Some never achieve this because of the problems associated with dependency But many do They take that first step And as additional steps are taken previously unrecognized options preTheir perception sent themselves changes Their abilities and confidence levels increase which serves to open up It is at new vistas and opportunities this point that they begin to develop characteristics of peak performance These characteristics are not mystical or magic They are the result of the that stem growth and development from continuing sobriety They include: Serenity-Tability to find peace amid the storm When this stage of development is reached a confidence develops that results in an ability to focus on things of importance To relax to concentrate and to let go allows for a deeper mental and physical relaxation to occur and a greater appreciation for life develops of Changes in resentment anger and other negative emotions the emphasis is on optimism In reality we tend to see what we tend to see The ability to live and enjoy one day at a time one moment at a time allows for an intensity seldom experienced before that point in the growth process Increased are perienced more frequently that can be described only as excitingly fulfilling: the tingle up and down the spine the warm inner glow the desire to make things happen Increased Sensitivity— A closeness with those around the develops chemically dependent Communication and awareness are shared without being spoken A sense of "oneness” occurs It must be remembered that these peak performance characteristics are just what the term characteristics performance They don’t occur all the time and they don't last forever But as sobriety increases in quality they occur more frequently In essence you might call them the icing on the cake of sobriety is CONFIDENTIALLY: Contagion the of intensity the lice control and the Babylonian Talmud recommended waiting eight days before again donning a laundered the lice time to die But during the Dark Ages in Europe lice were called “pearls of first by St Francis of Assisi— and were a measure of saintliness Saints boasted the water never touched them except when they had to cross rivers In the 12th century when the murdered Archbishop Thomas a'Becket’s seven layers of clothes were removed to prepare his body for burial a chronicler recorded that the inner garment “boiled over with lice like water The in a caldron” simmering onlookers it was said alternately wept for having lost such a leader and laughed with joy at having found such a saint By the 17th century European upper class etiquette dictated that it was bad manners to scratch from habit rather from necessity and that it was improper to pluck and squish one’s vermin in company except in the most timate circles The English version of these rules was copied out by George Washington when he was a schoolboy Frequent bathing and changing of lice And clothes have discouraged lousiness is no longer considered saintly The 16th century British evangelist cleanliness advocated as John Wesley next to godliness But louse outbreaks are not uncommon Lice are easily spread by physical contact and stray hairs and sporadic infestations may occur under the best of sanitary conditions particularly among schoolchildren Open your eyes and see
