THE SUNSHINE GENERATION Wed March 11 at the Scipio FILLMORE Dana and Tabby” underlined with red lips and a paw print Angie Green When we were living on State Street in Reno NV I had my first experience with raising Siamese cats I had four females and my husband and I went to Sacramento and purchased a beautiful male Within a short time my raising pens contained twenty kittens Living through the block from us was a young 12 year old girl who was absolutely in love with cats She came every day and helped me clean the pens and prepare the food But mostly she sat on the lawn and petted the cats and kittens There was one she was especially fond of and came running from school every day and asked out of breath if her kitten had been sold Her mother disliked cats and had refused to let her have one When they were eight weeks old and ready to be sold told Dana I couldn’t keep her kitten but would give it to her if she could get permission from her mother The next day Dana came running through the back lot and breathlessly told me her mother had agreed to let her have the kitten if she would keep it in her room She took the kitten home and brought it bach every afternoon for a visit Needless to say the kitten grew into a cat and as night follows day found a tom cat to spend her neighborhood nights with and soon began to have the appearance of a very pregnant cat Dana’s mother had somehow endured the presence of a hated feline but wasn’t in any way going to allow her home to be overrun with twenty little pattering feet So one day when Dana was away from home she wrapped the cat in a coat and took it down to the river which was nearly at flood stage She climbed down to the bank near the bridge and threw the cat into the swift water thinking it would carry the cat away quickly but she was strong and a good swimmer and began fighting the current and swimming toward the bank She reached a willow branch and Dana’s mother became hung on hysterical and decided to wade out and rescue the cat but the minute she stepped into the water she practically sank out of sight She had stepped into a hole five feet deep The current was pulling on her and she was screaming and clinging with the cat to the willow A half a dozen men on the bridge rushed down the bank and pulled her and the cat to safety She wrapped the cat in the coat and ran all the way home Tabby was dry and curled up in her box when Dana returned home and some second was having mama thoughts about nine lives and all that stuff When Tabby’s kittens were eight weeks old I ran an ad in the newspaper and sold all of them within two days Dana Tabby and Mama moved to Denver a short time later I received many letters from my dear little friend and they were always signed “Love Evan and Zola
