Show Millard Counts Delta High Council Spotlights Rosalie Vernon Debater participate at Weber Delta’s debate team participated in the Weber State College tournament Jan Roger Reynolds made it to quarters finals in debate varsity division Daniel Leslie also did well s in missing breaking by only a few speaker points It was only his second tournament debating but he was ranked as first speaker from Delta before the tournament In debate novice division Christie Stanworth and Shereff Abdelaal missed breaking by a few speaker points Shereen Abdelaal and John Escott missed breaking by only seven points Gung Hay Fat Choy! Happy Chinese New Year! On January 29 the 2nd grade classes of Mrs Nielsen Mrs Palmer and Mrs Simmons and the 2nd3rd class of Mrs Burton celebrated by having a New Year’s parade Authentic costumes for the event were provided by Miss Chen (our staff member from Taiwan) The children have been learning in about the five day celebration preparation for the parade by reading “The Story of Tan” Eating almond cookies made by Mrs Palmer was a favorite The of the celebration children made Chinese lanterns masks and dragon tails for the parade Mrs Nielsen’s room made a paper mache dragon head Students made Chinese banners which are tissue paper fish (a symbol of good luck) Children learned how to write Happy New Year in Chinese “GUNG HAY FAT CHOY” Students received paper money and a present called “Lai Se” symbolizing good luck for the following year Since Chinese people clean their homes for the new year children cleaned their desks for the event! to They made paper firecrackers welcome the new year They also received a new bookmark for the event with GUNG HAY FAT CHOY in Chinese written on it The children learned about Chinese birthdays Everyone follows the lunar calendar and turns their new age on New Year 1987 is the Year of the Rabbit (Go Delta!) Most of the students were born in the Year of the Snake Horse or Ram which gives them the characteristics of being “77” - tenacious “78” - strong and “79” - proud Shereen’s average for speaker points per round was 28 only two below the possible 30 John’s average fro speaker points was 29 This was the first tournament in which Shereen did not break The next tournament will be in American Fork’s Individual Events Tournament held Feb but most of the debater’s are looking forward to the SUSC tournament on Feb Shereen Abdelaal said “I’m looking forward to competing at SUSC In past experience Delta has done well predict that we will rank high among the schools” Over the years there are many teachers who have been addressed as “my teacher” but only a few outstanding teachers are addressed as "my teacher - my friend” One teacher who is often thought of by her present and former students as a friend is Mrs Rosalie Vernon Mrs Vernon has taught Special Education and Resource for a number of years in Delta High School High school can be a discouraging and frustrating time for students who are having trouble the material being understanding taught Mrs Vernon has been the help they needed and sometimes the only real friend that they felt like they had Many times she helps them understand not just the subject matter taught at school but how to cope with life when it is difficult and demanding Mrs Vernon knows of difficulties and sorrows in her own life Her husband Olen died in 1985 and now she has the of raising her three responsibility children Blake and Brooke Craig alone Mrs Vernon was born to Stanley and Ruth Holman in Alamosa and she has four sisters and two brothers She graduated from Manassa Colorado High School in Manassa and then went on to college at ColAdam State orado State University College and SUSC She graduated with a degree in Vocational Home Economics Elementary Education and Special Education Mrs Vernon came to Delta with a wealth of experience in teaching She taught Home Economics for nine years and was able to set up the Vocational Home Economics program at Sanford High School during that time She left to Colorado Sanford teach and fourth and fifth kindergarten grades reading and math in Nevada She taught there two years and had eight kindergartens one year and twelve the next She has taught Resource and Special Education for the last nine years and she says she enjoys teaching the students at Delta High School CUB SCOUT NEWS Edith Dearden Banquet The Paiutes legends tell that Shinob-thPaiute’s younger God a brother to Tobats called all the Paiutes close to him As they came close to him he put an Eagle Feather in the back of every man’s head and told him to wear it home It would be good luck According to legend this is why the Paiute wear a lone eagle feather and not a bonnet of many feathers They wear this feather bent forward like the hand of Tobats in the back of their hair The Boy Scouts of America chose the eagle to be the symbol for any scout earning 21 merit badges in the first handbook for boys published in 1911 Since that time it has continually stood for all that is good in this great youth program This year we have fifteen young men who have received this honor They are: Jeffery Odgen son of Mr and Mrs Sid Ogden Delta Neil K Farnsworth son of Mr and Mrs F Gale Delta Jeremy Roberts Farnsworth son of Mr and Mrs Glen L Roberts Michael Scottorn son of Terry and Takako Scottorn and Nathan Taylor son of Fred and Kathy Taylor were presented the Arrow of Light Award by Charles Ferguson Cubmaster in a special ceremony following the path of Akela from the Bobcat to the Arrow of Light Cub Scout’s highest award and pointing on to the Scout Eagle award at the fourth Ward’s Pack 209 meeting on January 28 1987 ggSS9SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!
