teachers were entertained by real live Indians while enjoying Stone Soup and punch Parents and patrons are welcome to visit the beautiful Coyote Christmas Tree Forest at the Delta South Elementary School MILLARD HICH SENIOR Cheryl Stevens daughter of Boyd and Anna Rae Stevens of Holden went the extra mile this Christmas season and made these 8 pound puppies for the East Millard Sub for Santa project Some were lucky boys and girls will become the proud owners on Christmas morning Special recognition goes to Cheryl for caring and giving of her time to help others Senior Ball to be held The Millard High Sr Ball will be held this I riday Dee 12 It will be held in the girl's gymnasium from 8:20 to :30 pm Cost w ill be $500 a eouple and $500 and $900 for pictures The floor show will be held last I riday Dee weie Project 5 Overall the survey showed a high support among parents for the various components of the project The smvey was conducted during conference last month Parents were asked to rate their strength of disagreement or agreement with six statements about the project on a scale of to 5 The statements were writeen to determine how parents fell about the value of each of the four aspects of the project reading contests time the RIF dmlynilentreading and the summer reading club Reading contests were rated at an scale average of 403 on the dicating a fairly high support of that The reading aspect of the program contests are held five or six times dining the school year They provide an incentive for students to read more Daily silent reading time known among I ES students as USSR time (Undisturbed Sustained Silent Reading) was also rated very high with an average score of 430 USSR time is the newest component of the reading enhancement project having been implemented at the beginning of this school year It allows every students in the school a 15 minute period of tune to read silently and undisturbed Teachers and staff participate along with the students About 18 percent of the parents surveyed were not familiar with this aspect of the project The RIF program was the component of the project most highly rated a titudes concerning by parents Two statements relating to RIF received an average rating of 484 funded and 480 The RIF program mainly by the PTA provides free books to students at three separate distributions during each school year Although receiving a positive rating from parents the summer reading club received the lowest average rating Two related to the summer statements reading program The first related to how much students enjoy participating in the summer reading club and received an average rating of only 387 The second related to how much of a reading incentive the summer reading club provided and received an average rating of 436t Known as the Chip R Munk Summer Reading Club the summer reading program challenges students to achieve certain reading goals during the summer Prizes are awarded at a special party in the fall to those who parsecticipate In a special "comments” tion of the survey form many parents suggested that changes made in the summer program this past year had made it too difficult and frustrating for their children to participate Principal Charles Ferguson indicated that participation in this past summer’s program was far below previous years A total of 154 parents returned completed survey forms Mr Ferguson dicated that the results would be very useful in charting the direction of the reading enhancement project The principal indicated that changes would be made in the summer reading program in particular to better meet the reading and their needs of both parents children "The most useful part of wisdom is for a man to give a good guess what others think of him It learn placed 0th in a 41 team five state University of Utah lournament this past weekend Coach Terry Hansen said over 6(X) students participated in what is considered one of the most prestigious tournaments in the west Delta was one of the smallest schools represented Among the individual efforts were Shereen Abdelaal and Brenda Alley placing first in the JV team debate Jodi Petersen and Angie Staheli placed 5th in JV after losing to the team from (it anger High that Shereen and Brenda eventually defeated for the Shereen also placed championship fourth and Jodi Peterson thitd m the speaker points for that event Mr Hansen coaches a squad ol vvltult about 20 student eompetitois routinely competes against schools with squads of 100 to 200 “We have a young squad this year with one senior two juniors and the rest are ninth and tenth graders" Mi Hansen said Delta High Council spotlights Teresa Thompson UNO DOUS TRES If you hear our second graders speaking Spanish it is due to the doors a few years ago it brought not only new couises but new teachers as well One ot the new teachers were Mrs Teresa Thompson who teaches several business couises Teresa was born to Ron and Norma Nelson in Pay son Utah and has one sister and one brother She graduated from Tintie High School in Eureka and then attended Utah State University where she received a BS in education with a minor in business administration While attending USU she placed second iti the state at a shorthand competition and also took a first place award as a member of a patlimentatv procedures team Teresa teaches Word Processing Business Communications Shorthand II and Secretarial Procedures She enjoys teaching high school students and adults and she also teaches night classes at the Vocational Center Even though it sounds like she has a full schedule she also enjoys and tennis in the summer and volleyball and snow skiing during the winter and squeezes a little tole painting into her spare minutes The
