Show Mitliird mini t hronii I SPs lliurs 4 IK l'X(i I’ji- Business of the Week Pioneer Market holds on to 83 year tradition Bucking a retail trend that has seen the neighborhood grocery become an endangered species Pioneer Market at 174 So 100 West in Fillmore is maintaining its reputation as the friendliest store in town where you can literally get just about anything you need Joe and Arva Dale Ashman and kids 13 and Nathan 5 Jody 16 Joshua are carrying on a tradition at Pioneer Market on a lot where a store of some kind has existed for the past 83 years It was in 1903 when Ed Day built the first store where the present Pioneer Market stands His son Eugene Day still lives in the old Day home next door Eugene remembers that he was just seven in 1918 when the old house and store were moved to a different corner on the lot so that a new brick building could be built That brick building is now the south half of Pioneer Market In Eugene’s day the store was a social center as well as supply store ‘‘On Sundays we cranked out buckets of homemade ice cream and the people would come and play croquet and the kids would have foot races It was a good time" Eugene said Eater on the illmore Cash Stote as it was known was managed by Santa Claus is coming to town Hey Mom and Dad!
