Show The fourth of Julv would not be complete without the Patriotic Program This year’s guest speaker will be presented bv American Legion Auxiliary The Master or Ceremonies will be Ron Smith Warren Peterson is "The bounties of iberty" The theme for this year’s celebration Sarnies eyes life by Bob Thomas It just may be that youth comes up with the short end of stick in the media’s accounting of world happenings Oh they’re good for a headline or two if they’re involved in Big wars or rounded up in investigations of drug dealings or illegal But by and large it’s difficult to read about interesting young people in toAnd that's simply day’s newspapers because the stories aren’t there Young people interest me Especialif ly they’re young intelligent people filled with the hope of their own futures They remind me of the sort of wish had been 40 years ago person When find one of those young like to write about telligent people him or her found one the other day right here in Beautiful Downtown Delta His name is Joel Sannes he’s 8 and he was most recently graduated — fifth in his class — from Delta High School He carried a highly commendable 379 grade average and he is being sought after by every college in Utah plus Arizona State University in Tempe and the University of Kentucky at Lexington All are offering full tuitions and a few are dangling additional academic scholarships before him We’re talking here Joel’s in no big rush to focus in on any one school He’ll wait until the end of this month carefully consider all of his options and then make his decision It sounds like the smart way to do things We spent a few hours together the other morning and early afternoon hadn’t met him before but had certainly heard about him Oak City 4th of July Celebration nos when he entered his teens He still bicycles 15 miles every day (weathet permitting) and he’s a There's nothing soft about the young man Lor the summer he’s a at Radio State KNAK You can find him on your dial from 2 to 9 pm Monday through Triday He holds an TCC Radio Operator’s He permit plays Country and Country Western but his personal preference in ‘‘hardcore punk" and "folk" from the ’60s He likes Bob Dylan especially In September whatever school he Joel admits somewhat shyly that he has always been a “good student" comes easily to him But then despite his young years he has mastered the knack of reading and His secret: he reads for the taining adventure of it He likes Hemingway and Scott Fitzgerald much of Dickens Conrad’s “Out of Darkness" and the smattering of Shakespeare that he has consumed A mite too light for competitive football and a tad too short for today’s high basketball hoop Joel is He nonetheless an athletic figure wrestled until ninth grade and he enjoyed it while he did it but other terests began to creep into his mind chooses Joel will devote his first year to general studies Eventually he now thinks he’ll pursue a career in constitutional and criminal law He’d like to be a criminal defense attorney He also wants to buckle down and maintain a 40 average throughout college Does he have apprehensions about leaving home for college? Only one He has never learned to operate a washing machine And he will of course miss his family They are a group: his father Larry a mechanic with the ederal Aviation Authority his llt a tax consultant brother mother Mel two years older and sister Becky two years younger But his future calls and he will simpa ly have to learn how to manipulate rinse cycle Once that and a in the legal is accomplished Joel profession would like to consider politics And perhaps some writing He is of the belief that all serious advancements in man’s growth have come about throught the piinted word loci
