Show Tine Millard 10 SPS I C'ounH Thurv Mar J V86 Divorce: Implications for Women rv (gttoSDO WSOtDl ABRAHAM Phyllis The high divorce rate is not news It’s divorce settlements that usually make the news these days Lee Marvin and Johnny Carson are almost as famous for their divorce settlements as they are as entertainers However most settlements don’t make the national news Although we have a general notion that splitting things down the middle we have is the ideal divorce settlement only a vague idea of what the middle is It is not quite as simple as sorting things out “one for you and one for What may seen equitable at the time the divorce may in reality be inequitable down the road according to Dr Barbara Rowe Extension resource management specialist at USU She interviewed 116 Oregon men and women that had been married at least 10 years before they got a divorce This was to insure that they had accumulated some property to divide One of the most significant findings was how much the incomes of women were reduced after divorce while at the same time men’s incomes stayed the Rowe says (All same or increased incomes were adjusted to account for the payment of child andor spousal support) “Few wives received spousal support after divorce Those who did received only a minimum amount for a fixed period This caused severe financial hardship for many of the women especially those who had been homemakers during the marriage ’‘These women were forced to take low paying entry level jobs The divorce also meant that the women lost valuable care coverage insurance and pension benefits” Rowe says “Only 29 percent of the wives in the study had any type of pension plan other than social security” This led to another problem Rowe says Even if the woman is awarded the family home in the settlement she is often not able to keep up the payments due to her lower paying job Women who took on custodial care of the children after the divorce vveie Even at even a greater disadvantage when they reeeived ehild suppoit payments it often was not enough to cover child costs for the fulltime wot mother she says One of the overall problems revealed through the study was the lack of ability of the wives In many instances Rowe says there was not enough family property to be divided or enough spousal support which could be awarded to compensate for the low income status of the divorced women in this study “Women today married or not will work at paid employment through most of their adult years One clear implication is the need for careerlife planning for young women to help maximize their earning capacities” Rowe says Young women should be well formed about the need for developing financial independence not only in order to avoid the financial pitfalls often encountered in divorce but also to help move closer to the concept of she marriage as a true partnership of FINANCING ON USED CARS One of our greatest Used Car selections ever and now 99 Financing is Available!!
