Utah This is an academic competition that involves schools from all over the state of Utah The MHS team did very well at this event We're proud of their work and because of this we wanted to further floor show of the dance The Sweetheait and attendants will attend the State FFA Convention March 28 at the Utah Technical College in Orem where Julie will represent the Millard Eagle Chapter in the State Sweetheart contest 1 he sweetheart activities were part of ihe National TEA Week activities and under the capable direction of Mary Wateis head of the chapter Recreation and Sectetaiy of the Committee by Kyle Stoll Reporter Julie Mace daughter of Mr and Mrs Mailow Mace of Fillniote and a senior at the Millard High School was crowned Sweetheait of the Millard Eagle TEA Chapter at the annual Sw’eet heart Ball held February 15 Tricia Cox retiring Sweetheart was present to officially crown the new Sweetheart Hist attendant to the Chapter Sweetheart is Cindy Rasmussen daughter of Mr and Mrs Everett Rasmussen Fillmore with Michele Stevens daughter of Mr and Mrs Boyd Stevens Holden as second The Royalty was selected attendant from 12 finalists consisting of a total of six juniors twelve girls were honored at the annual TFA Sweetheart assembly with the announcement of the winners Music students participate in solo and ensembles concert American Legion Drug and Alcohol Auxiliary Awareness Week announces essay Richard Munro the Music Director of the Millard High and Fillmore Mida solo and dle Schools arranged ensemble concert that was held at MHS last week Several Middle and High School students participated Jeff Benand Tiffany nett on the trombone Wood on the sax were 8th giade students who performed solos Jennifer Dearden and Lisa Finlinson comprised a clarinet duet Jeff Bennett Jason Jacobsen and Billy Mace performed as a Brass Trio a flute quartet consisted of Teresa Christensen Teresa Anderson Jody Johnson and Nadine Swallow and Brenda Christensen Jennifer Evans Jeremy Smith and Missy Sides did a clarinet quartet Selected members of the MHS Girls Choir who were Rachelle Barton Tiffany Burns Karma Charlesworth Tina Church Angel Cox Katie Erickson Sandy Larsen Regina Moyes Marina Pochurek and Pauline Ziegler sang Julie Mace and really nice numbers Danene Perkins performed Clarinet and Mr Ron Christensen Solos Munro doubled on a trombone duet and a clarinet quartet was presented bv Patricia Dearden Angela Edwards Katrina Hirschi and Shalmie Tracy All who participated did a great job We appreciate the efforts of the music The people involved in The Annual Girls State tryouts will be held Sunday March 16 at 5 pm in the American Legion Hall in illmore All Junior girls are eligible to apply All candidates are asked to w ear their Sunday best Last year’s girls staters Cindy Rasmussen Jodi Wood and Danene Perkins w ill be presenting a short program to go along with the interviews Refreshments will also be served We encourage all those girls who are terested to try out Girls State is a beneficial experience for all that attend a big success The Drug and Acohol Awareness Week held March at MHS was a big success Danene Perkins did a 3 day presentation at Mrs Ford’s 4th grade class and a presentation for one of Mrs McFarlane’s PE classes There were awareness announcements on the radio and school intercom and posters that advertised the event There was a “Hugs not Drugs" day where everyone was given a button that bore this motto and where hugs were given to stress alternatives to using drug and alcohol as solutions to problems The Peer Helper’s Group presented a program for the community and PTA and tended a drug and alcohol awareness conference in Salt Lake City The student body administrators and faculty appreciated having this awareness week and were very supportive They feel it increased their knowledge and helped them realize what a problem substance abuse is Peer Helper’s group presents progam for PTA The MHS Peer Helper’s Group presented a program last Thursday evening for the parents and PTA members of illmore under the direction of Garth White Chciyl Rose and Danene Perkins The program included several skits which illustrated the consequences of drug and alcohol use and abuse and ways to say no to peer pressure The presentation also included by group members and their reasons for not using harmful substances This group works with the prevention of drug and alcohol abuse in the schools and community and has done many such presentations at the elementary and middle school They have also brought special programs to Fillmore in conjunction with Central Utah Mental Health All who attended the presentation last Thursday evening were very impressed and enjoyed it a great deal chapter contest winners The Tillmore American Legion Auxiliary has selected the winners of their annual contest The theme for this year’s essay was “Freedom Under the Stars and Stiipes" The winners in the Middle School were 1st place Travis Stevens 2nd place Tamilynn Starley and 3rd place Nadine Swallow Sharon Koyle took 1st place in the high school with Cheryle Stevens taking 2nd place and Danene Perkins taking 3rd place We would like to acknowledge these students for their accomplishments and commend all who entered this contest Fillmore youth attend Drug-anAlcohol Awareness Conference Several students from the Fillmore Middle School and Millard High School attended a drug and alcohol abuse prevention conference sponsored of by the Utah Federation yough in Salt lake City Gov and Mrs Bangerter were in attendance and Mrs Joyce Nalepka the National Federal of youth president parents for Several other prestigious figures were also there The students attended many interesting workshops which they feel will be very helpful in their prevention efforts Their advisors and chaperones Cheryl Rose Vicki Hare and Karen Groesbeck also felt this was helpful All were grateful for the
