from a thief who has made up his or her mind to have it but it is not sufficient reason to either give up biking or to stop taking precautions against thievery A prospective bike thief need only three (3) elements to be successful Opportunity 2 Time 3 Tools There are ways in which you can reduce the thiefs elements and make your bicycle more trouble to steal than it’s worth The basic security of a chain seems a good place to start in discussing preventatives to bike theft Delta City Police Department has had 6 bicycle thefts reported in the past 2 months In reviewing those theft reports I find one victim had his or her bicycle chained either to a post or just around the wheel One should understand that a professional thief can remove any chain no matter how tough and sturdy if he or she has the proper tools and sufficient time However generally speaking a chain that can withstand the cutting force of a 24 inch bolt cutter is considered practically theft proof Remember the elements opportunity time tools Even the presence of a chain or cable will discourage the casual or amateur thief since no one wants to take the time cutting a cable or chain her or she may be seen or even caught ‘‘Papa’s So take the time to chain or cable your bicycle by locking the front and rear wheel and the frame to a permanent pole or other object which cannot be cut sawed or picked up and carried away with your bicycle still locked to Dear Editor: Many of our politicians don’t have their priorities right when it comes to dealing with crime They seem to think that failure to fasten a seatbelt in our cars is a that must dastardly felony indeed be stopped at all costs No doubt after this legislative exercise in big brotherism is over we will next turn to legislation requiring us to wear our overshoes when it rains Seatbelts are not the only “solution” to violent crime we have seen our politicians come up with recently No doubt one of the most awesome efforts to combat mugviolent crimes gings and other occurred in New York when 1300 policemen were detailed to apprehend Bernhard Goetz the victim Cook County Illinois has been the scene of an even more recent capture of a victim by the authorities Philip Roos the administrative director of the Christian Liberty Academy Satellite Schools was frustrated by the Cook County Sheriff Department’s repeated failures to apprehend a Peeping Tom who had been frightening his daughters In it of this year February it In those same reports reviewed the bicycles were left on the front lawn at church swimming the school pool movies and other places which gave the thief opportunity to just take them and ride away Keep your bicycle inside buildings and homes whenever possible If it is an in garage apartment tool sheds or barns keep it chained and locked Know your bicycle Keep a record of its serial number make color and any other special marks or features Mark your bicycle with your name or other identification in a conspicuous place and also record that information on your inventory sheet or notebook that in the event your bicycle is stolen the police will know what they are looking lor and when we find it it can be identified as yours from your inventory sheet and returned to you heck with your Law Enforcement agency about registering your bicycle and improve security measures You can help reduce bicycle theft and put back some of the original pleasure of biking Steve Allred Crime Prevention Specialist Delta City Police Dept plied After the police captured Roos they handcuffed him and took him to the precinct for booking Happily were dropped when the charges Roos went to court for too long have Politicians pressured the police to catch victims It is time for instead of criminals Americans to be encouraged to carry And it firearms not be discouraged is not time to send the police out after "seatbelt bandits” while real crooks are breaking faces and lives Sincerely Lawrence D Pratt Thanks to those who helped during personal crisis Answer” When was a young girl in my teens worked with my father in the fields saw him work early and late long before and after the regular hay crew saw him work with dust and sweat on his glasses until he could hardly see the harness he was mending or the machine he was repairing or the mower knife he was sharpening The dust of the August field caked on his old fell hat Callouses of shovel and pitchfoik on his hands There was was not much money don’t remember that they ever gave me happened again Roos had his wife call the Sheriff while he took his 38 Smith & Wesson for loaded protection as he went outside to try and catch the pervert The Peeping Tom fled and as Roos walked down the street in search of the criminal the police arrived Roos was told by the policeman pointing a gun at him to put his gun on the ground Roose replied that the The crook was away getting “Drop it or policeman responded you're dead” Roos quickly com- any It was not expected They took care of my needs One day said to papa “Papa you oi k so hard what do you get?” He didn’t answer me for a long time wondered if he had heard so didn't say it again He just kept working inally he stopped and looked at me for a little while and said “Satisfaction Mary" Through the years since that day have been grateful for that good answer It has been a help to me in my life If we do not get satisfaction there is not much Sometime that is all the pay there is but it is enough Mary llenrie know of no of words that can explain my situation my feelings and my sincere concern
