If you do there are several contests coming up that you just might be interested in entering One is sponsored by The Salt Lake Tribune and the Utah State Poetry Society This contest is primarily a poetry and short story contest for high school and junior high students The other contest is sponsored by the National PTA Entries for this contest include visual arts literature and music Entries in this contest must be MHS Academic Decathlon team defeats Delta High will go to State finals The Millard High School decathlon team defeated Delta High School by a score of 25340 to 17960 to earn the right to represent the county in the State Academic Decathlon This program is a competition in the academic areas of fine arts social and grammar English and economics At science math the state level an essay writing competition is added as well as an impromptu speech and a personal interview The final event is a Super Quiz performed before an audience A team is made up of two “A” students two “B” students and two "lower than ‘B’ ” students Contestants must participate in all ten events Often the students with lower grades do better due to the inceased motivation to excel when they have often been satisfied with centered around the theme of “Imagination” The Delta High yearbook staff will be accepting original manuscripts to be included in a special color section of the yearbook this year Watch for more details on this contest Deadline for entries in the first contest is February 18 1985 All regularly enrolled students in grades 10 through 12 are eligible for the senior contest The junior division includes 7th 8th and 9th grades Entries in both divisions must be original unpublished works Prizes and awards will include cash The sweepstakes and medallions awards includes a trophy one of approximately 100 students who received awards from Principal Simmons Honor Students praised For the fourth consecutive year Delta High students have been recognized for academic achievement The in a special honors assembly previous three years it was handled by the National Honor Society as a service project but for this first term the student body officers and class presidents took charge Principal Simmons encouraged the students to learn all that they can so their lives will be easier He also praised the whole student body’s attitude He said “In other places I’ve been principal the students think of school as a prison I haven’t heard that here” Delta’s two Academic Greg Topham and Jamie Wood were also honored Nine 40 straight A students receivfrom Principal Simed recognition alternate and Nathan Giles John Ashman They were coached by Shirley Robins Aaron Britt was the medalist winner with 5100 points for Kim Clay junior and sophomores Liesl Finlinson Layne Finlinson and
