Helen Rogers, Clerk of the Board of Education, Millard Mill-ard County School District. Subscribed and sworn to before me this 5th day of August. 1957. J. R. Wood, Notary Public Residing at Fillmore, Utah My Comm. Expires Mar. 2, 1960. (SEAL) SCHOOL LUKCH BIG BUSINESS By Superintendent G. P. Wright During the past school year hot lunch centers were operated in the elementary schools at Hinck ley, Sutherland, Delta, and Fill more, and at the junior and sen ior high schools in Delta and Fill more. These six centers served 227,409 lunches during the school year at a cost of just under 38c per lunch. Of this cost, state funds provided 3.9c per lunch, federel funds 13.2c, of which 3.5c was in the form of federal funds, 2.0c under the special milk program, pro-gram, 7.7c under donated surplus commodities. The balance of the cost, 20.4c per lunch, was paid In lunch tickets by the participating students. Not only is the school lunch pro gram big business, it is important business. The total cost of the program in the district, including surplus commodities, was $68,544., of which $26,609. ' was spent to pay the wages of the twenty-two persons employed in the program; $35,066. was spent for food, and $6,868. for equipment and mlscel laneous expense. The size of the school lunch program, as great as it is, is dwarfed by its importance to the school children of the district, particularly to those who are transported. It is interesting to note the philosophy as expressed by con gress in the National School Lunch Act: "It is hereby de clared to be the policy of con gress, as a measure of national security, to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation's children, and to encourage the domestic consumption of nutrl tious agricultural commodities and other food, by assisting the states, through grants-in-aid and other means, in providing an ade quate supply of foods and other facilities for the establishment, maintenance, operation and ex pansion of a non-profit school lunch program." Secretary of Agriculture, Ezra Taft Benson, recently made the following statement: 'The National Na-tional School Lunch Program has proved to be a most effective means both of improving the diets of children and of expanding mar kets for agricultural commodities Its progress has been based 'ipon the joint efforts of Federal, State, and local groups. The commit tee will work to incorporate state and local groups in the future planning of School Lunch Devel opment." Surgeon General Thomas Par-ran Par-ran made the following statement with reference to the nutritional needs of school children: "We are wasting our money trying to educate children with half-starved bodies. They cannot absorb teach ing. They hold back classes and require extra time of teachers and repeat grades. This is expensive stupidity. We shall spend tomor row on the care of the sicknesses many times over what we save on food which would prevent it." READ SCHOOL STORIES IN THIS ISSUE This might truly be called a "school edition " because it not only includes the annual financial report of the Millard School Dist rict, but many interesting and In formative articles by SupL G. P. Wright and other administrative personnel. Some of these appear on this page, others are on page one and elsewhere in this issue. The chart above indicates in some detail how the school dollar was sliced to carry on the various functions involved in operating the schools of Millard County. Twenty nine and three tenths cents was spent for instruction, the major item of which was salaries, but In- eluded also under instruction were such items as textbooks, teaching supplies, and school periodicals. The next largest slice in the school dollar equaled 28.4 cents for the unexpected balance in the building fund. Twenty-three and seven-tenths cents was spent during dur-ing the year for the construction of new buildings and remodeling of existing facilities. Three and seven-tenths cents out of each dollar went for trans portation, 4.2 cents to conduct the school lunch program, 3.6 cents for plant operation, 1.2 cents for plant maintenance, and 2.9 cents for fixed charges. Included under fixed charges is an amount of $25,778.85 which represents the district's contribu tion to the state school employ ees' retirement system and pay ments to federal social security, The full amount of this expense is reimbursed to the district un der the uniform school fund. Included In-cluded in fixed charges, also, is an item of $9,172.00 paid to Mill ard County for the collection of school taxes. One and three-tenths cents of each school dollar was spent for idministration. This covered the TheS chool Dollar in Millard County WHERE IT COMES FROM - WHERE IT GOES By Superintendent G. P.
