Cox, Cliief Agronomist Cyanamitl Auricullural Research Center, Princeton, N, J. AanTi now oaDonn flffrinnmlata orn lA. 7 placing greater emphasis on application of I v a major part of a crop's nitrogen require- ments well hpfnre nlantin?. Surveva show T. R. Cox that more and more farmers are accepting this advice. More nitrogen is being applied in the fall and early Bpring. There are sound reasons back of this trend to pre-plant application of nitrogen. Most important of all, deep-placed, pre-plant, ammonia nitrogen nitro-gen is used efficiently by crops on most of our productive soils. Corn, cotton, sorghum, and crops with a high nitrogen requirement require-ment are deep-rooted, deep feeders. If nitrogen is plowed down or chiseled in, you can be sure it is in the moist root zone, especially especi-ally during drought periods. Deep placement of nitrogen and other fertilizer, too, for that matter stimulates deep rooting. As a result the crop makes better use of available soil moisture. Theoretically side-dressed nitrogen is more efficient because it is applied nearer the time of heavy crop use. Actually, side-dressed side-dressed N is often less efficient simply because it is nearer the soil surface and hence less available to the crop. Also, the soil compaction and root pruning caused by side-dressing are avoided if pre-plant ammonia is applied. Yield per acre of corn in particular is influenced greatly by time of planting. Research shows that a significant loss in yield can be expected for each day's delay after the optimum planting period. If most of the fertilizer is applied pre-plant leaving only a minimum amount of starter, planting during those critical few days is an easier job. In the final analysis it is not entirely a question of when should fertilizer be applied. It is rather a question of when must it be moved from plant to dealer and to the farm if every high yielding field of corn is to get the optimum quota of fertilizer planned. It is both poor management and poor economy for the farmer and dealer alike to run the risk of not getting the total amount of the right fertilizer for your 1967 crops. took Leo Davis back Monday to the Veterans Hospital. Cyanamid agronomists say if nitrogen is plowed down or chiseled in, you can be sure it is in the moist root zone, especially during drought percds. America the Beautiful...
