A condition where the brain is prevented from reaching full de velopment, limiting the victim's a- bility to learn and put learning to use retarding social adjustment. It is a life-time handicap that ranges from slightly i mpaired development develop-ment to complete disability. To what extent do the mentally retarded differ from other people? This depends on the degree of mental retardation. Those who are least retarded are scarcely disting uishable from "dull normal" members mem-bers of our population, but those whose handicap is extreme may never be able to master such tasks as feeding and dressing themselves. Degrees of mental retardation are measured by considering both "measured intelligence". Since "measured intelligence" usually ties quite closely to learning ability, abil-ity, this factor assumes greatest importance in childhood, whereas "adaptive behavior" the ability to make a living and to handle oneself one-self and one's affairs with the prudence pru-dence ordinarily expected of an adult ad-ult in our society is the more important im-portant determinant of the degree of retardation in an adult. (Ed's note: The Chronicle will publish pub-lish a small article each week on the subject of Mental Retardation) RONALD E. FAULKNER GAINS DEGREE IN DENTISTRY Ronald E.
