Show Rome Bars Construction Of Skyscraper Buildings ROME. Rome, the Eternal City of the Caesars and the Popes, will never permit skyscrapers to take away its light and mar its beautj. The superior council of public works examined a ruling of the Rome municipal housing authorities authori-ties with regard to new constat-tion constat-tion and approved regulations limiting limit-ing the size of houses and office buildings. First of all, the council agreed that every housing project must be studied and given the opinion of the department of fine arts and antiquities before any work is started. For the purpose, the city has been divided into three zones, the suburban, the downtown and the central part. In the suburban area, building permits will be easy and houses may reach a maximum height of 99 feet far from skyscraper status. In downtown Rome, the fine arts commission must give a special permit before any building is done and no structure can be over 89 feet tall. For new construction in the "most central zone," the old rigid laws which retain the antiquity of Rome are still in effect. Not a stone can be moved in the heart of the city without the approval of at least six different government and semi-government bodies and '.. public works council said it did il expect many applications. |
