E. Simons In recent years, the concept of publsc health has become of great interest to all of us. The magazines and newspapers carry articles concerning the heal'h of the public, and the people in general are more concerned with than their health and they ever have been before. Local, state and federal governments have spent a great deal of money for projects, to protect the health of the people, which the individual is unable to pay for h'mself This is called public health. Examples of this are your local sewage and garbage disposal systems, which protect the public hea th through sanitation. The insect spray program now being carried out in Milford is an example of public health as practiced voluntarily by the people of a community. Your state government provides funds for certain laboratory proced ures, for help in determining the cause of major epidemics, etc. Many large private funds, such as the Polio Foundation, help protect the public health. There are many .things, however, which only the individual can do to help protect his own health, that of his family, and his neighbors in the community. In these things he has the assistance of his doctor. This we call preventive medicine. What are some of the things the individual can do? Avoidance of exposure to infections, by himself and his family; prevention of accidens irt the home and on the farm; maintaining sanitation about the home; these are all functions of the Individual. With the help of his doctor, the individual can promptly treat disease; he can obtain immunizations which will protect him from certain infections, and he can obtain advice from his doctor as to how to plan ahead for the protection of his family's health. The individual owes a duty to his community to promptly report and seek treatment for infectious disease, since each case represents a source of Infection for others. Your doctor and yous) local health officers are handicapped la their prevention of the spread of infectious diseases unless they know the .nature of prevalent Infectious diseases, when and where they g .mj Wt Have a Plan to Fit Every Nmo - South Milford Strictly Modern with full basomtu and slokar.
