Show . . . WEEDING Those who this year wield hoe and urge cultivator with virginal enthusiasm are learning with surprise that weeds are a bountiful crop in all gardens. It is, on the whole, a .salubrious lesson, as well as educational. At the present moment, there may be disagreement over the technique of weeding. There are two main schools of thought. One holds that the only way is to get down on hands and knees and crawl along the row. The weeder can rest on one hand as the other pulls the unwanted, lush-growing, tenacious plants. The other school contends it is more efficient to rest on one knee and hitch along. This is the .semi-vertical position as contrasted with the horizontal. We have respect but no comment for those who bend from the waist. As for, the hoe, that cannot reach the intruders , among the young and tender children of our toil. Victory gardeners may pay their money and take their choice. Decision is difficult and observation leads to the conclusion that most gardeners change techniques frequently. frequent-ly. But the problem must be faced squarely and without equivocation. The choice is weeds or vegetables; there is no middle ground. Christian Science Monitor. m |
