That is a lot of body piercings, pizzas, CD's and clothing. It is also a huge reason why parents and teachers should be arming these young consumers with skills in financial management, says Liz Gorham, Utah State University Extension specialist in family resource management. In support of teaching Utah youth financial skills, Gov. Mike Leavitt signed a proclamation Feb. 1 declaring February as the Utah Financial Literacy for Youth Month. To help schools in this effort, USU Extension, in cooperation with the High School Financial Planning Program, is offering free training to teachers. The training consists of a sixunit, 10-hour program financed through the National Endowment for Financial Education. The financial program encourages schools to apply educational approaches that provide teens . the financial tools necessary to live within a budget, to balance their bank accounts and to learn how to " plan, Gorham says. "By helping our teens become more financially literate and proactive in the planning process, we can help contribute to their personal financial stability," she says. "A positive offshoot is that, in the process, we are contributing to the economic well-being of the state of Utah." The High School Financial Planning Program now enrolls more than 500,000 high school students from 6,000 schools in all 50 states. Utah schools already involved include Altamont, Beaver, Dixie, East, Milford, Northridge, West, Pine View Middle, South Davis Jr.. The program forces students to stop and think | about the ways they spend their money, Patricia Johnston, a high school teacher at High and Salt Lake Community High. It ‘opens a dialogue between parents and students says East also and teaches students where to go if they get in trouble with their finances. “Most of my students did not have any financial ‘training’ before the program," Johnston says.| “Money, like sex, does not seem to be discussed with children in most Utah families." Most of her students say they want to know how to get credit, buy insurance and learn what it takes to buy a car. This is important considering that many teenagers spend their money on "nonessentials," she says. "And that makes this plogram even more important since this sort of program is not included in Utah's high school curriculum.” Teachers interested in receiving training for teaching the program can contact a USU Extension ,educator in their counties. The rules: (1) Send one original poem 21 lines or less, (2) Your poem may be written on any subject, rising any style, but must be positive in tone, if not MAR-261A inspirational. A love poem would do nicely. (3) Be sure your name and address appear on the page with your poem. (4) The deadline for entering is April 15. A winner's list will be sent to entrants on or before June 1. “We encourage beginners," says Mr. Atigilly, "and our judges understand that. All the same, fresh and original poems will be upper most in their minds. Many times a poem can be improved by merely editing a few words."
