"Pete" Havward is warnine motorists to use extreme caution , when driving during periods of inclement weather to prevent being involved in an accident. Sheriff Hay ward suggests that motorists follow these tips to help reduce the likelihood of being involved in an accident. SALT 1. Allow a little extra time before leaving to clean the snow and ice off windows, roof and trunk. Allow time for the interior of the car to warm up and defrost the windows. Don't try to drive looking through a small circular hole in an otherwise frozen i windshield. The side and rear wirw dows need to be clear as well. Brushing the snow off the roof and trunk can prevent a deluge of snow covering the windshield when stopping suddenly, or obscuring the stop lights without the driver's knowledge. 2. If the car does skid . . .turn the wheels in the direction of the skid. Also, remember that four-whe- el drive vehicles have the traction to get going but cannot stop any better than other motorist in conventional vehicles. 3. Adjust speed to driving conditions. Allow more distance between vehicles when driving on slippery streets and use extreme caution when driving on less populated roads or freeways. Be sure to yield to emergency vehicles including fire department vehicles, ambulances, and police vehicles. 4. Decreased visability can be compensated for to some extent by wiping off lights and driving with headlights on. 5. Check windshield wipers to see WJ Police Participate In Drug Arrests WEST JORDAN. In a combined effort with law enforcement agencies on the state and local level, West Jordan police during the past week were able to arrest several individuals that have been involved in buying and selling large amounts of illegal drugs. Two search warrants were issued for two West Jordan residences early last week, one for a home in the 1900 block on Drake Lane (7400 South) and a second for an apartment near 7800 So. Redwood Road. Seized in the searches were drugs, ' cash and weapons. Public Safety Director Kal Fair said information leading to the West Jordan arrests was gained when a prior complaint being investigated led officers to conclude that the problem was connected to another investigation being conducted on the state level involving drug trafficking at the State Prison. Four individuals were arrested in the incident. Drugs seized were 2.2 pounds of cocaine valued at $150,000, five dunces of heroin tar valued at . $38,000, two ounces of brown heroin valued at $16,800 and $45,000 in cash. The Drake address is near an elementary school and middle school. they function properly. Also, check tire inflation and see if sufficient tread remains for winter driving. Checking the windshield washer solvent level is important as well as having the battery tested. 6. Studded snow tires are great on ice, but may make the driver overconfident when driving in slush or snow-pacIf traveling in the canyons, remember that snow tires are mandatory. 7. Use extra caution when entering and exiting a vehicle to avoid slipping and falling. 8. The sheriff recommends that drivers consider maintaining an "emergency" kit in the car. This could include jumper cables, flares, or emergency triangles, a flashlight, tow chain, rock salt and a shovel, a woool blanket, some food items and additional warm clothing. 9.
