This Midcentury Conference was so comprehensive and its coverage so complete that to fully report it would be impossible. Since its findings and recommendations will be published in the near future, they will be accessible to all who are interested. I will however, give a few of my own impressions. The Midcentury Conference was called by President Truman for the purpose of bringing together over 5000 of those leaders in the field of child care and of pooling their resources in an attempt to aid our youngsters in attaining a satisfactory status. All delegates to the White House Conference had one thing in common they were interested in children and youth and were concerned with their problems. Included in their number were doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, educators, sociologists, lawers, law enanthropologists, forcement officers, social workers, P.T.A. representatives, clergymen, and others. Each delegate was choien because of his standing in his particular field, and was extended a special invitation by the President of the United States. Only persons having regrlstration ren and Youth which r iiiHMiHiiaJ1: Governor J. Bracken Lee this week urged enthusiastic response for the 1951 March of Dimes drive to raise funds to fight the dread crippling disease of infantile paralysis. The Governor invited a group of polio patients from Salt Lake County in all stages of recovery to visit him and commend them for their fight against the disease. The March of Dimes finances expensive treatments and buys wheelchairs, crutches and braces for those hit by polio, most of whom cannot afford expensive necessary care. During 1950 the Salt Lake County chapter spent more than $27,000 on patient care and funds are now gone. Granite Mtt. S Peter Petersen, Rtporttr Several delightful social afairs were tendered Miss Shirley Hand of Wasatch during the past week, who on February 1 became the bride of Kendell Timothy of Union in rites solemnized at the Salt Lake temple. Last Thursday night she was honored with a kitchen shower at the home of Miss Melba Colba in Salt Lake by the women employees of the First Security bank, where Mrs Timothy is employed. Friday night in Granite she was feted by the Gleaner Girls at a bridal party given at the home of Mrs Linnie Gold. The making of household articles, also a bride's book, were entertaining Eight guests were served refreshments. Monday evening a shower was given at the Kimball apartments in Salt Lake for the new bride by Misses Iva Lee Duf-fiDeliah Gordon and Colleen Terry, Jordan high school chums of Mrs Timothy were special guests. The Granite ward is chapel feeling the artistic touch of expert decorators for the past two weeks. The whole main floor is being redecorated. Sage colored tints have taken the place of the tan wallpaper which has served for 12 years, and the stained woodwork is also being painted to harmonize. Alfred Lippold from Salt Lake has had a crew of men at work and promises to have the job done by this Sunday. John H Glenn, father of Mrs Emerson Hand who has been recuperating at the Hand home the past six weeks, returned to his residence in Salt Lake City last week, Mr Si Mrs Don Nielson and children of Pocatello, Idaho, were Granite visitors recently at the Emma Beckstead home. Granite Deacon's quorum headed, h by their class leader, Henry went to Lamb's canyon Saturday for a day's outing. Outdoor sports were enjoyed and eats were served in the cabin. Salt Lake county planning board officials will be present to discuss the county program. Naming of Granite's first citizen will also take place. Lif-fert- j SENTINEL MIDVALE THE Friday, February 2, 1951 Page Two cards were admitted to the meetings. There were two general meetings each day and two other group meetings. In these latter there was free debate on all issues. Out of these debates and discussions the findings were evolved. These a findings will serve somewhat as ten next years. blue print for the The major theme of the Conference was how can children be helped to developmental, emotional, and spiritual qualities for their personal hapiness, and for In its responsible citizenship. platform preamble the conference reiterated its belief "in the prim acy of spiritual values, democratic practice, and the dignity and worth of every human being, and recog nize that these are essential to individual happiness and responsible citizenship." I have several pages of conference material which outline the findings in many areas. I also attended over 20 meetings at the Conference. From the mass of material and notes which I gathered the following seem to me, to be the most significant, 1. Every child, every person is important, and should be given opportunity to develop his potentialities. 2. All who touch the lives of children should have regard for their individual worth and sensitive respect for their feelings. 3. Children need a home free from the fear of want. should be 4. That children in trust to have people and taught things. 5. That parents are the most significant persons in the child's life, and that they must be helped to feel adequate to the task of rearing a child. 6. That the education of children with special handicaps, and the providing of special services for children, should be under the control of local Boards of Education. 7. That it is the obligations of the schools to (1) teach the necessary skills and (2) to promote the building of the total personality to teach hira how of the child to live happily and successfully with others. 8. Children should be taught the values of being self reliant, dependable human beings. Self direction should be the goal of all in guiding the young.
