Five years of experiment, under the sponsorship of big copper companies, indicates that applying copper to fields increases tobacco yields, and may step up production of cotton, potatoes, soy beans, and some vegetables. The tests were made on more than 100 farms in North and South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, West Virginia, and Illinois over a four-year period. 89 Tests Made Eighty-nine tests were made on tobacco, and in 63 cases the yield was increased. In nine cases the quality of tobacco was improved. Production increases varied from 2 to 35 per cent. The research on other crops has not been extensive enough to be conclusive. Scientists point out that copper is one of a number of so-called "plant micro-nutrients." They are usually ignored in fertilizer .programs, mainly because little is known about them.
