Show THE SENTINEL, MIDVALE, UTAH Page Seven FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 1946 Spotlighting UTAH Brickbats and Bouquets A new invention, called a "mo: tjon transformer'' has just been perfected by James A Hardman of Logan. Nationwide acclaim has come to the ·inventor for his contribution to science. The Civilian Production Administration in a 158~page report says the device has survived t~ severest tests and will entirely eliminate crankshafts, wrist pins and connecting rods; nit opens a new rield in mechanical design and may revolutionize the operatin of motors and mechanical devices". Not over ten days ago--before Mr Hardman and his invention became famous-the Utah Department of Publicity and Industrial Development was severely criticised and condemned by the editorial writers of Salt Lake's leading newspapers for contributing encouragement and a few thousand dollars of its funds in order that the inventor might bring the machine to perfection at the Utah Agricultural College. All of which goes to prove that it's easier for some editors to toss brickbats than bouquets. Science to Locate Utah Minerals As a result of the war, there has been a tremendous advancement in the field o! geophysics and new methods recently evolved may be of .great value in helping the nation uncover undreamed of deposits of mineral wealth, declared Dr William E Wrather, director of the U S Geological Survey while in Utah to speed up a new program of geological mapping. Charles B Hunt, regional geologist, U S G S will start the work in Utah. The days of surface prospecting are practically over it was explained, and scientific methods will now be used to locate mineral wealth hidden deep in the earth. The Utah Department of Publicity and Industrial Development, along with the University of Utah and the Utah State Agricultural College will cooperate with Mr Hunt and the U S G S. Utahns Educated But Pooz A nation-wide survey now reveals that Utah leads all other states in education per capata, yet its citizens are near the bottom of the income bracket with a per capita annual income of only $439. Seventeen per cent of Utahns over 25 years of age have some college training, and 6.1 per cent have college degrees, compared with a national average of ten per cent with some college education and 4.6 pe1· cent with degrees. Researchers declare that Utah apparently lacks sufficient jobs of the quality which could be handled by its well educated citizens. Game Officials Win Point Game officials of several western states in a meeting with Albert M Day, Washington D C, Assistant Director of the U S Fish and Wildlife Service in Salt Lake City, partly won a battle to have a voice in the planning of all contemplated government wildlife projects. Ross Leonard, Utah's director of !ish and game, pointed out to Director Day that the jurisdiction over migratory waterfoul, but felt that states have sovereign right-s to manage their own game under necessary regulations". Texas Tourists Coming Heavy tourist traffic through Utah to the Pacific Northwest, entering over highway 160 which taps the Gulf Coast areas of the U S j.ncluding Dallas and Fort WQrth is seen by highway experts. It is pointed out that this road and its northern Utah connections may soon be designated as a superhighway from the Gulf of Mexico via Utah to Canada. The designating of this part of the highway system as a major trunkline has long been a major project of the Carbon CoWlty Associated Industries, who through J A Theobald, the organ· ization's executive secretary, have gone to considerable effort to enthuse others to support the promotion of this important tounst and freight highway. In addition to the 16 per cent wage increase for the more than 1.000 union employes of the company, Mr. Nichols said, the agreement advances the expiration date of the contract from February 26 to January 26. This means, he ex:plained, that increases applied to salaries a full month before the 1946 contract expires. The only other changes in the agreement, he said, were of a minor nature. The new agreement, Mr Nichol declared, was negotiated during an amicable five-day conference between the union committee & United States outside the Library of Congress."
