A motorist doesn't have to sprain his neck now looking for the traffic signals, as was formerly the case. • Christmas greeting cards are going to be very scarce this season, and it is doubtful if any will be manufactured for the 1944 yuletide. We were for~ate in securing some attractive cards, ordered last winter, and these are now on display at reasonable prices. We suggest that you come in early and select your cards while we have a good assortment. PARTY PLANNED FOR • ALL EX-SERVICEMEN veterans' "stag party/' to which all ex-servicemen of this vicinity who se1·ved in World wars I and II, has been arranged by Jordan Post. American Legion, to be held Saturday, Oct 8, beginning at 8:30 p m, in the Pioneer hall, West Jordan. Chairman of the event is Joel R Wilcox. who states that an excel1ent program of entertainment has been secured, and that a lunch will be served during the evening. World War II veterans may bring their fathers to the stag party, and all ex-servicemen are urged to come out and enjoy the comradeship of the evening. A Kiwanians to Meet With S. Salt Lake Members of the Midvale Kiwauis club will hold an in terclub meeting Monday night with the South Salt Lak e club, at the Temple Square hotel, when high officers of Kiwanis International will be present to give talks. A Publication Devoted to the WelJare and Progress of the Jordan Valley MIDVALE, Salt Lake County, UTAH Volume ll-Number 39 UTAH WAR FUND OPENS TUESDAY IN ALL SECTIONS To raise from the generous and patriotic people of Utah a fund of $405,000, an army of work ers for the United War Fund of Utah will take the field Oct 3. The annual solicitation by the War Fund, representing in qtah the Na t ional War Fund, will be the one-gUt contribution of this state to the immense sum needed to administer the affairs of 22 home-front, military and for eign relief agencies. M S P eterson, local bank er, is chairman of the United War Fund drive for the Midvale area. Since 1943 the list of agencies has been increased by the addition of 5 new ones that have affiliated with the National War fund. For the campaign, every county in the state has completed its organization. Chairmen, assistant chairmen, treasurers and workers have been mobilized to see that contributions to the fund from every source-group and individual-are up to the customary high standard of Utah aid for worthy causes. It is pointed out by officials oL the United War Fund of Utah that, while the need for relief funds for all the agencies during the past 2 years has been acute, the need has increased with the liberation of the European countries. HOLDEN KILLED IN ACTION Word has been received by Mrs Melvin Lind, that her nephew, Pvl John W Holden, 18, son of the late John A Holden, World \Var I veteran, has been killed in action somewhere in the Pacific. He was a member of the U S Marine Corps, enlisting on Nov 17, 1943. P vt Holden, son of Mrs Alice Balis, Murray, was bm-n in Murray, Sept 18, 1926, and graduated from Murray high school. Prior to his enlistment he was employed as an aircraft mechanic at Hill Field. He had been on overseas duty since .January. Survivors include his mother and three grandparents, Mr & Mrs Thomas Williams Murray, and John N Holden, Midvale. Central District Club Women Await Convention in Midvale CAPT. JACK ALLEY REPORTED "MISSING" * S · Sgt LeRoy N Swenson of Sandy was awarded the newly authorized Bronze Star for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy during the battle for Attu, by Brig Gen Joseph L Ready of the Seventh Infantry division, in a ceremony held recently at a Central Pacific base. S -Sgt Swenson, member of an infantry assault unit, received the decoration in recognition of his outstanding actions, beyond the call of duty, in the grueling 3week battle for Attu, tip of the fog-bound Aleutian Island chain, a yea rago. A veteran of 2 campaigns in the Pacific war, S-Sgt Swenson participated with the Seventh division in the recent assault and capture of Kwajalein atoll, center of Japheld Marshall Islands. In addition to the Bronze Star, S-Sgt Swenson wears the American Defense Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon with 2 battle stars, and the Combat InCantryman's badge. JORDAN SCHOOL MAKES GREAT RECORD IN WAR BOND DRIVES * A veteran of 34 months in the South Pacific, T -Sgt Doss A Dean ~ son of Mr & Mrs Dick Dean, East Crescent, is home from New Guinea on his first furlough in 4 years. Doss was in Australia before Pearl Harbor attack, and has been through 3 major campaigns against the J aps. His unit received the presidential citation for gal· lan try in action. In a dd ition he wear s personal m edals. S gt Dean entered t h e arm y J ul y 11, 1941 , a n d after 4 m onths' training at F ort Douglas, he went. over· seas in November, 1941. Friday, Sept. 29, 1944 Ca p t. J ack Alle y Word was received Wednesday night by Dr & !\'Irs J S Alley, Midvale, that their son, Capt Jack Alley, was .. missing in action." The war department telegram simply stated that he was ''missing in flight over Asia, as of Sept 16' .' Capt Alley has been stationed in China and is a mem ber of the B-29 bom ber squadron making attacks on the Japan homeland and Manchuria. His wife r esides in Salt La.l<e City. The parents will follow their children's class routine and tea- A special citation from the War Finance Commission has been issued to the South Jordan elementary school for excellent work in purchases of war bonds and stamps during the 1943-44 school term, Principal George Barton revealed this week. Each student in the school purchased an average of $58.62 in bonds and stamps during that period. For the present school term the students have set a goal even higher, and hope to purchase sufficient bonds and stamps to buy 2 army ambulances and a Hjeep" by Christmas, Mr Barton said. The South Jordan school has qualified to fly the "E" flag by having a 100 per cent participation in the purchase of bonds and stamps during this month. The South Jordan Parent-Teacher association, cooperating with the students, is sponsoring the "milkweed pod drive" in that locality as their first project of the year. To date the boys and girls have filled 300 bags of the pods, which are used in the manu· facture of life jackets for every service man who goes overseas. Legion Auxiliary Announces Meet The program for the next regular meeting of the American Legion Auxiliary of Jordan Post No. 35, to be held Wednesday night, Oct 4, has been announced by Mrs J R Wilcox, program chairman, as .follows: Musical numbers by Collin Wood and Edith Walker; accordian solo, Jean Mickelsen; address, Lt LeRoy D Simmons, U S navy recruiting officer of Salt Lake City. Lt Simmons will speak on the war in the Pacific, and will show a motion picture film, "Your Ship in Action."
