If such a task faces you, don't shy away from it. Book reviewing is fun when you know how to go about it. Planning is the key to a successful report says Winifred Baumgartner, and she gives the important steps in the October issue of Good Housekeeping. First, she says, state the theme of your book in one sentence and follow it up with the setting-the timt and place where the action occurs. As for plot, build up suspense by not telling the entire story. And since characters are usually important, talk about the way the author has brought them to life. Are they vivid? Do they develop during the story? Speaking about the author is another good suggestion to follow. Each author has a special style peculiarly his own and it is wise to explain just what this is. Most important of all, estimate the value of your book, pick out its strengths and weaknesses and make them clearly understood. When you have finished the final draft, rehearse it several times in front of a long mirror. This final act will not only insure calm and confidence, but will also succeed in giving you the necessary poise to arrest attention of club members when you deliver the review.
