Glenda Fair- bourn won 1st prize in the Individual complete costume contest. • 1 1 I I Tile American Legion sponsored an essay contest this spring on the aubject, "How International Disputes Can Be Settled In a Spirit of Fldac." Kary Mickelson and Ethel Carlquist won five-year dairies on their essays. Priscilla Robertson and Robert Sanderaon, students of the Draper Jr. high school have been awarded honorable mention and prizes of ten dollars each In the national soap sculpture contest. This Is a national contest held at the Art Center in New York City. Entries are made from every state in the Union and the judpe are prominent art authorities. These atudents made their soap ca.rviDp under the supervision of Jl'lorence Christensen, art Instructor at the Draper school. This is the second tune that students of lollu Christensen have received awards for this type of work. Priday, September 24, 1937. THE UTE SENTINEL The Draper school band, under the direction of Murray R. Lewis has made considerable progress during the summer months. They met for practice twice each week and held Sunday concerts. They also gave two concerts in Glacio Park, one for the Boy Scouts' gathering and another at the East Jordan Stake Sunset Service. This group of ambitious boys and girls enloyed several trips to- gether this summer. On June 30, Roosevelt Day, the band paraded 1 on the streets of Salt Lake City and gave a concert at Lagoon, where the Roosevelt festivltl,es were held During Covered Wagon Days they participated as one of the bands In the colorful parade. On August 12 they helped Salt 1 Lake county to win first place at , the State Firemen's conv.ention, held at Midvale. August 19 was Sanpete baseball day and Draper pitted her strength against the allstars of that south.em county. Here the band gave a marching demonstration and concert. Labor Day saw Draper conducting one of the principal celebrations of the state. Here again th.e band participated as an entertaining organization. Seventy-eight members were enrolled in summer band work, and forty-two of these were beginners. RIVERTON formed a party in Butterfield canyon Friday evening. Mrs. Melvin Peterson spent Monday and Tuesday at Ogden as guest of her daughter. Miss Violet Howells of McCall, Idaho, is spending the winter as guest at the home of her sister, Mrs. Ether Butterfield. She will attend the Jordan high. Mr. and Mrs. Ether Butterfield and children returned home recently after a trip to Mccall, Idaho, where they spent three weeks visiting with Mrs. Butterfield's parents and relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Peterson and son, Don, and daughter, Elaine, accompanied by Mrs. Steadman and children of Midvale spent Sunday up Provo canyon, where they entertained honoring Jay Steadman's birthday anniversary. SANDY 1 took place recently. The young couple are making their home in Salt Lake City. Mrs. Nellie Hissong of Bellingham, Washington, has returned to her home after spending the past month with her sister, Mrs. Mary E. Reid. The marriage of Fernie Ann Mace of Sandy and Owen LaVer! Reed of Lark, took place during the week. Bobble Sorenson, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Sorenson, suffered a broken collarbone Friday when he fell from a tree. James Ostler, six year old son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Ostler, suffered a broken arm Monday when he fell while playing on the bars on the school grounds. C. Earl Alsop returned during last week from a business trip to Los Angeles, California. Elmo Steffensen who has spent the past few weeks traveling in the western states, spent the weekend with his 'family. Mrs.· J. Bowen and daughters, Ann and Mary Joyce, of Salt Lake City, were visitors Saturday of Mrs. C. J. Graff. Mrs. John H. Shaw and Mrs. A. J.
