"Barbed Wire" is an adaptation of Hall Caine's great novel "The Woman of Knockaloe." The powerful story has lost nothing in its tra;nsition to the screen; rather it has gained. Tuesday and VVednesday For Gloria Swanson, star of "The Love of Sunya" coming to the Diana Theatre in Midvale next Tuesday, life has always bee;n a struggle . It began with hard work back in the days when she made a start in the old Essanay Studios in Chicago. There are those who think, perhaps that achievement of stardom would bring a life of ease. But the truth is that harder work and more responsibility come with this success. Now that she has acquired an interest in United Artists as a.n independent producer she has less idle time than ever. Gloria first appeared in public as a Corner Meat & Grocery 1t. R. GILBERT her father, an army officer, was stationed at the time. A few years later, she was leading lady of an operetta given by the school at San Juan, Porto Rico. "The Love o! Sunya" is her first i,ndep!mdent picture for United Artists to release. She looks upon this as the most significant stey in her career, and hopes the enthusiasm and the determination she is putting in the work will result in pictures meriting the · proval of the public which has been sb kind to her i.n the past. Thursday and Friday The courage of the "Shepherd Dog" or as he is better known, the Police Dog, is legendary. The obedience of this animal is also an established fact It is extremely doubtful, however, if ever a dog, or man for that matter, was ever subjected to such a supreme test as that undergone by "Thunder" the famous marvel dog of the screen, in the making of his latest Gotham Productio;n "The Silent Avenger." The preliminary action was gone through successfully and then Mr. Da vis gave "'11hunder" the order to remain still, standing in the center of the railroad track. On came the train at thirty miles an hour. The en~ti.neer had instructions to come to a de d stop within ten feet of the dog. The train, however, was nearer two feet than ten when it stopped, but "Thunder" never moved an inch! although he had every reaso;n to think the train would run over him. Sam Sax, lost the bet and Frank Davis lost a couple of pounds' weight watching it. The scene is a dramatic highlight in the "Silent Avenger" at the Diana Theatre next Thursday and Friday. The Diana Theatre is a consistent ~vertiser i.n the local newspaper and believes their astounding success in Midvale in their short run here is due manly to the effective use of Journal advertising. It's a tough job at best running a picture show house on mail order printed bills. People demand a local medium in whick to see the pictures adverti!Cd. The Dia;na will have still greater successes if they continue their present methods. Experience has proven that fact. Home town newspaper advertising is a proven fact, not an experiment.
