''I'll take the chancel" then maling to Gal1aghe•·, he ordered, "get anotlwL· man with ::~orne nerve and iliaD the dory!" Inside of half an hour the dory pulled silently up to the stern 01 Bothwell' s ship, which was moored up the river. Jack groped in the Jurkness for some time before he found the rope. Hand over hand he L'eached the deck. He could hear men talking behind the cabin. Sneaking along the rail he reached the companionwa y. He heard Boris Bothwell's voice, "Don't be foolish, Evie, I will return in one minute for yom answer." Jack thrilled as he heard Evelyn reply, "My answer will not change, I prefer death to marrying you!" "You will change your mind." Bothwell assured her. Jack waited. Bothwell passed him as he crouched in the shadows. Jack sneaked up to Evelyns door. Fearing to knock, he opened it without ceremony . She gave a little cry, then recognizi ng Jack, she ran to hi:~ urns. "My darling,'! she whispered , "You :nust hide quickly! Bothwell is coming back with Parson Jones! Go! must be done at once. I am going to f th b S e ullets or yourself, Sedgeave wick! You'll prefer sudden death to what I have in store for you!" Jack bolted the door from the inside and said nothing. Again Bothwell spoke--th is time with a chuckle of glee. "Before ! kill you I am going to let you witness my marriage to Miss Evelyn Wallace. Just stand at the porthole and you'll hear everythin g!" Jack could hear Evelyn crying. His blood ran cold ·as he heard the detested voice of Bothwell trying to :::onsole her. "I will marry you, Boris," said Evelyn, "If you will promise that no harm shall come to Jack Sedgewic k!" Jack's heart stood still. "Don't marry that beast, Evelyn!" he cried At that moment a fusilade of shots plit the night. "All hands on deck!" shouted Bothwell, "the ship is being at:acked!" Jack heard a scurrying of feet. .\lore shots. The ncame a tapping at the door, "Open up, Jack! It's Yeager!" Jack unbolted the door. Yeager entered Excitedly he explained how Blythe and a party of rescuers in a rowboat were keeping Bothwell and the crew engaged to enable him to neak aboard. In a few seconds Jack had reached Evelyn's gide. The three made their way to tht. stern where a Malay h:::·t ::nt c:::c:o :: Bothwell' s approach ing boot heels on II the deck, but he risked one long kis!l 1before he darted from Evelyn's cabin to hide in the cook'c store room. No sooner had he begun to congratulate himself on his safety than Jack Sedgwick never knew how the cook entered with a lantern in much he loved Evelyn Wallace until one hand and a potato pan in the now. He left the treasure room with other. At the sigh tof the refugee its vast fortune in gold and gems _ he dropped the lantern with a yell of ladder to the dory. Under threat of instant death they kept the Malay silent, forcing him to accompan y them in the rowboat. The firing continue! until the little boat had drifted to safety.
