Show mm THE SENTINEL is, 1984 Thursday, March Page 2 Sister, brother finish one-twin spelling bee It's that ' f v., i more or her younger brother Gary will ever forget the of the word spelling "persistence." It was that word that separated them as first and second in the annual Midvale Elementary Spelling Bee held over the past week. Holly got it, Gary didn't. According to the pair, the last Jr : thing they expected was to be facing each other as the final two spellers in the Bee. Just how much that might have affected the competition, the reader will have to judge for himself or i herself. "I thought she might be mad if I won," stated fifth grader Gary, while at the same time denying he threw the match. "I really didn't think I'd get that far," was all that sixth grader Holly would say. Interestingly enough, neither the judges or the proctor recognized them as brother and sister until after the Bee, when they were asked to give their names. Then the lights came on. "You wouldn't be brother and sister?" Perhaps the fact they decided to go it their own in practicing for the event had something to do with it. They worked independently and when they needed help, Holly called upon her mother and Gary his father. Holly reported that she fully expected last year's champion to repeat this time around. But, Holly explained, the champ made a deadly error in the game of spelling: "She didn't get the definition right." Instead of spelling "way" as in "Out of my way," the champ spelled "weigh" as in "How much do I weigh?" That break helped Holly and Gary on their way to the championship finals. Rounding out the top four in the competition, Traci Hansen came in third, and Lee Rawlins placed fourth.
