Imagine growing food which didn't need, but others could use. Well, that's the basic idea behind glands. Certain kinds of cells that group together into a larger unit, manufacture a substance which the group itself doesn't use, but which the rest of the body needs is called a gland. There are two types of glands : the exocrine and the endocrine. Exocrine glands produce a substance that is passed directly to the place where it is used by way of ducts, or tiny tubes. Some of these glands make saliva, some make tears, some produce sweat and others aid in digesting food. The endocrine glands do not have ducts. The substances they produce are called hormones and are secreted directly into the blood stream to be carried all over the body, wherever needed. Some of these glands more than one produce a hormone. Remember, chemical is a hormone messenger, helping to control and coordinate the activities of the different organs and tures so they will work together. you Although the exocrine glands are important, the importance : and complexity of the endocrine cannot be over system Hormones are the emphasized. main regulators of metabolism, reproduction, stress response, fluid balance, and energy balance, just to mention a few. There are even hormones that simply regulate other hormones. ' Some of g the major endocrine glands include the pituitary, which is considered the master gland of the body, the thyroid gland which produces thyroxin, the pancreas gland which produces insulin, the ovaries in the female and the testes in the male. In the following articles, we will see just how this fascinating system of endocrine glands and their hormones stimulate and regulate the body's function in the precious earthen vessel.
