Arterial blood pressure is the pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries. This pressure is generated by the pumping action of the heart. When you go to the doctor and have your blood pressure checked, he is recording your arterial blood pressure. This pressure is the maximum pressure of the blood exerted against the artery walls when the heart contracts to pump the blood throughout the body. This arterial pressure also reveals the force of the blood exerted against the artery walls when the heart is resting, or is in between beats. The systolic pressure, or the first number recorded, is the effect of the heart at work. The diastolic pressure, or the second number recorded, is the effect of the heart at rest. This diastolic pressure is usually considered more important because it indicates the condition of the arteries and how they are adjusting to the flow of the blood. The normal systolic pressure is between 115 to 120. The normal diastolic pressure is between 75 to 80. Therefore, the blood pressure is read as 120 over 80 or 12080. There are variances in what would be considered normal blood pressure readings. Usually a reading of 15090 would be considered border-lin- e hypertensive, or having high blood pressure.
