Sandy; Scott Dennis Staley of Sandy displays trophy six point he bagged the opening morning of the annual bow hunt in the Maple Grove area near Scipio and Salina. As of last Wednesday, it was the largest buck taken during the hunt. Staley downed the buck, his second in 16 years of bow hunting, with a 60 yard shot. Other members of the party were Tommy and Mark Wooten of Midvale plus Max Griffin, Dale and Vince pringle, Wade Staley, and George Doverspike. Golf action starting on Thursday of this week Region Two high school golf will tee off this Thursday with teams four of the five local taking part. The opening schedule shows Kearns at West Jordan (Glenmoor Village) ; Hillcrest at (Meadowbrook); Taylorsville and Bingham at Alta (Mt. View). Brighton will bye on Thursday. Jordan over in Region Seven doesn't open play until Sept. 6 when they meet Judge at Mountain Dell. George Hughes over at West Jordan will have his most experienced team yet with four seniors new entering their third year with the program and a junior who started out as a freshman for the Jaguars. The seniors include Brad Johnson, Ted Parkin, and Wayne Crosby and the three year junior is Brett McCleary. One other junior expected to see a lot of action is Richy Anderson. Hughes had a total of 25 kids show up for tryouts and is still looking over this year's crop to fill up the remaining slots on his this year's team include Gordon Treadway, Kuss Muir. Rod Connors, Liz Schneiter, Mike Minnick, and Paul Johnson. Keith Bingham High's Chappel stated that he had 20 young men tryout for the Miner's varsity squad, most of those juniors, sophomores, and freshman. Some returning starters like Devon Dentin and Chris Lecates are expected to act as a stabilizing force on this 4-- A 's varsity roster. Alta, which lost a fine bunch of starters to graduation last year, is still tied up in the tryout process, reported coach Rex Wright. Wright stated that it will be Wednesday of this week before he will finalize his varsity selections. Jordan coach Perry Brady said that his team has had three days of work so far, but some starters expected to return to year's team. Hillcrest has a good corps of returnees from last year's team which finished fifth in the Region Two standings. Coach Jim Jimas feels that with a full year : of experience under their belts, the Huskies can certainly improve their standing. Back for Hillcrest is four year starter Brad Nelson plus Jeff Chris, Mike Careen, Kurrin Bickmore, Todd Grossman, Blake Forsey, and Russ Groomer. (Results avaialble by deadline. ) and Alta byed Tuesday Jordan's first match isn't until Thursday when they host Judge at 3:3u p.m. Other Thursday matches include West Jordan at Kearns, Bingham at Taylorsville, and Alta at Bingham, all starting at 3 p.m!
