He was honored as Track and Field Athlete of the Year in 1981 and named the Outstanding Athlete in the 1980 Olympic Trials. During the 1976 games in Montreal, he roomed with gold medal decathlon champion Bruce Jenner. Pole vaulter Glen Briggs of Hillcrest clears the bar in finals competition for that event. Briggs went on to win the pole vault and his team the Region Two trophy. HHS guys win crown in region track ai Alfa Kyle Jensen and Marty Haws were double winners for the Huskies, Jensen taking the 110 hurdles in a region record time of 14.50 plus the 300 hurdles and Haws the 100 and 200 dashes. Dave Adams won the long jump, Glen Briggs, the pole vault, and Jace Brewer the 3200. Hillcrest won all three relays with Haws, Adams, Jensen, and Markus Ehrhardt in the 400; Adams, Erhardt, Wayne Jensen, and Ray Odorizzi in the medley; and the mile with Haws, Darren Fackerell, Brewer, and Jensen. Turning in seconds for Hillcrest were Dan Hill in the shot put, Brewer in the 800, and Vernon Greenhalgh in the iavelin and with thirds were Jim Duke in the discus, Brewer in the 1600, and Hill in the javelin. Alta's Hawks came away with a pair of firsts as Art Birchum won the 400 meters and Dave Stoedter the shot put. Adding seconds were Paul Prawitt in the discus, Mike Vanderbeek in the 3200, Mitch Hall in the high jump, Todd Larsen in the 200, Mark Christensen in the 300 hurdles.Mark Bennett in the pole vault, and the 400 relay team. While at third were Joey Gale in the long jump, Dave Williams in the pole vault, and the mile relay Hillcrest High got past Alta to win the boys Region Two track title in competition hosted by Alta Friday and 163-15- Saturday. The Huskies have now set their sights on state and the likes of Clearfield and Viewmont this Friday and Saturday at Weber State College in Ogden. Action will get underway at 10 a.m. both days. Taylorsville was third at Region Two with IV-- points followed by Brighton with 56, Kearns with 45, Bingham with 24, and West Jordan with 14. Jordan, over in Region Six, placed fourth behind Murray, Tooele, and Judge. The state meet will be held at the same place, date, and time as the 3-- A 4--A. ( f S x1 team. Kyle Edwards and Bob Hebdon were both second, Edwards in the 100 and Hebdon in the long jump. Hebdon also earned a third in the high jump and Christian Hansen was third in the 800. Bingham's Dave Reniker stole the show in the middle distances, winning both the 1600 and 800.
