From the content of these news releases it would seem Sandy City's officials have never read Section mi of the Utah State Constitution, "All men have the inherent and inalienable right to enjoy and defend their lives and .liberties; to acquire, possess and protect property; to worship according to the dictates of their . assemble to consciences; r peaceably, protest against wrongs, ; and petition for redress of ,' grievances; to communicate freely their thoughts and opinions, being responsible for the abuse of thatright." v These news releases apparently were meant to intimidate the citizens of Sandy City, so they would not sign petitions that are circulating. Sandy City officials said it was a felony to sign an initiative petition, if you are not a registered voter. What kind of elected or appointed servants of the public trust could actually prosecute some one for signing a petition? When the only thing they need to do is scratch their name from the petition. Every name must be counted and verified to ascertain if they are a registered voter, this is done at the County Clerks Office.
