Show THE CSOT1NEL Thursday, AprH 1, 1M2 The PTI Reflections Contest arts or a way of allowing expression of inner feelings, and the Th purpose of the nationwide PTA "Reflections" contest is to provide the opportunity for that personal expression and creativity. Each primary and secondary student plans, designs, and creates a piece of art in his own medium, whether it is literature, music or the visual arts. The results are then judged on a local school level, with the winners going to council competition, region, state, and finally the notional contests. Why the arts? The PTA explained that while students outstanding in academic fields often gain recognition, mot students talented in the arts are frequently overlooked. The goal of the "Reflections" contest ii I S-'X- 4i i region, six, 42 elementary, 10 middle, and six high schools participated, with 6,578 elementary, 1,513 middle and 278 high school students from Jordan District competing. The judging was done with all age levels competing against each other although the age of the entrant was taken into consideration. Murray end Jordan School I UJJ Twenty-fiv- e region winners were than selected, equally divided among art, literature, and music, and these entries were sent to state competition. Out of the approximately 70.000 total students competing statewide, five in each of the three categories were chosen to go to the national contest this June. Jennifer Olsen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Randy Olsen, Cottonwood Heights, and a student at Mountview elementary was the sole competitor from Jordan District chosen to go to the national contest. PTA Region VI The Sentinel would like to ockowledge those who were helpful in compiling this Reflections section, including regional PTA director Jeri Moncur, PTA presidents and principals of Jordan District schools. Because the vast number of students involved in the Reflections contest, it was impossible to photograph every winner. The Sentinel made every effort to contact all Jordan District schools and or PTA presidents. In some cases, schools were contocted several times without response. Regretfully, we will not be able to run pictures of this year's Reflections winners in future issues. Students who were not present when our photographer visited their school were invited to submit their pictures, these students are shown below: i lives and talents touched by the "Reflections" program," said Region PTA Director Jeri Moncur. Contestants from region six, which encompasses Jordan and Murray school districts,, totaled 9,719 from grades on through twtv. ' more than giving creative students a chance to be recognized. The PTA also lists several other objectives: t. To provide an opportunity for youth to us their creativity by expressing themselves through their own original works of art; 2. To encourage youth to view their world realistically, and to express their beliefs and portray their emotions in a tangible way; 3. To use the work of the students as a medium through which adults may gain o deeper insight into the thoughts of the younger generation; 4. To encourage students in the field of cultural arts; 5. To emphasize the value of cultural arts in the school.
