They will not rid your garden of all destructive insects, according to Melvin S. Burningham, Utah State University extension service agent in Salt Lake County. First of all, he explained, insects are attracted to certain types of lights. The ordinary light bulb is very attractive to a wide variety ox flying insects. Some lights such as the "black light" emit radiant energy in a much narrower range than the common light bulbs. They are highly attractive to many insects. Researchers have, for a long time, used light traps to determine the presence and number of various kinds of insects in an area. As a survey tool, lights aid entomologists in determining when certain insects are becoming abundant. Beneficial insects, as well as injurious insects, are attracted to the lights. Many insects are attracted into the area of the light that normally would not be there Mr Burningham said. Also, he added, only night flying insects are captured by the traps. Wingless insects and insects which fly only in the daytime, such as che housefly, are rarely caught. ga. vl v. lood and snon ram coat with Compoct, all oc- fasteners.
