OSTLER, CorreqJCndent Sandy Lions Open Swenson Brothers Season With • Serve Nation Well S-Sgt Leroy N (Bud) Swenson Canyon S o c i a I of the infantry, stationed somewhere in the Pacific, was recently awarded the Bronze star for outstanding participation in the battle of Attu, according to word received during this week by his parents, Mr & Mrs Clyde Swenson on Pioneer avenue, Sandy. Sgt Swenson also participated in the battle of the Marshalls in the South Pacific. A graduate of the Jordan high school, where he was yell master. Sgt Swenson entered the army in January, 1941, and left for overseas service in April 1943. His brother, Pvt Archie M Swenson was recently transferred from Egypt to western Africa according to word received during the week by his parents and his wife, Mrs Norma Swenson of Sandy. Pvt Swenson visited in Jerusalem, and various points of interest in Egypt. He is a graduate of the Jordan high school and also served as yell master of the school. The other 2 brothers, LaVell Swenson, served as yell masters at Jordan and Bob Swenson, the youngest son, is now yell master at Jordan high school. The Sandy Lions club was honored by a visit from Interp.ational President D A Skeen, and Jack Denton, fanner district governor, at their opening meeting and social Thursday evening at the Glacio park lodge with 72 in at- tendance. The newly elected president, Dr Thomas E Clark, was in charge with First Vice-president Art Lund as master of ceremonies. President Skeen gave an enlighting talk on the activities of the Lions International. A complete report on the re- cent national convention held in Chicago was given by Jack Den- ton. A talk stressing som~ of the planned improvements and projects of the Sandy Lions club for the coming year, was given by Dr Clark. Musical numbers included vocal quartet numbers by C C Crapo, Dr C C Jensen, Reg White and C A Greenwood; accordian selections during the evening were by Miss Beverly Morris. ENSIGN H L JENSON VISITS RELATIVES HERE Mrs. Clark Entertains For Mother, 82, On Birthday Anniversary Home on furlough before leaving for San Diego, recently was Ensign H L Jensen, son of Mr & Mrs D A Dowding of Sandy. While visitfng, "Dutch" as he i~ lmown by his close friends, ac companied by his sister, J eanene, and brother, Lynn, spent 2 days at Salina, Utah, where they visited with relatives and friends. Relatives visiting Ensign Jensen during his stay at his home in Sandy were his grandparents, Mr M rs E T Parry of Manti, was guest of hon or at a luncheon give n by her da ughter, Mr s Thom as E Clark at her home Thursday afternoon, Aug 17, honoring the 82nd birthday of Mrs Parry. Attractive summer f lowers were used in the room and table decorations. Luncheon was served at 1 p m . Those present included Mrs Parry, and her daughters, Mrs E D Sorenson and Mrs Samuel Brooks of Salt Lake City and Mrs C B Johnson of Ogden, and other members of the family, Mrs Nat Parry, Mrs Phil Purcell, Mrs Fredrick Sorenson, Mrs J Mercer Anderson, Mrs P E Olson, Mrs Howard Haynes, Mrs Clifford Edmunds and Miss Jane Lamb, & Mrs C H Olson of Redlands, Calif, and H S Jensen of Salina, Utah; hls aunt, Mrs L Dean Petty and 3 children of Los Angeles, and an uncle and aunt, Mr & Mrs Roni Jensen and 2 children of Salina. RETURNS FROM EXTENSIVE VISIT IN CALIFORNIA Mrs Lester Denney returned Friday from a 2 week's trip to California, where she visited with her sons, Robert Denney, S 1-c of the navy stationed at Alameda, and Pfc Rulon Denney of the army medical corps at the Dibble hospital at Menlo Park. She also visited with Mrs Rulon Denney at Palo Alto, and with Mr & Mrs P E Markham at Fort Bragg, San Francisco, and with her son-inlaw, DeVon Beckstead, CM 3-c, of the navy, who is at the hospital. near Oakland, where he has been confined the past several months suffering with malaria. Mrs Denney was accompanied on her many visits in California by her daughter, Mrs Evelyn D Lewis of Boulder City, Calif. all of Salt Lake City, and Mrs T E Clark and daughter, Miss Char- lotte Ann Clark of Sandy. Mrs Parry, a daughter of Nathaniel and Jane Jones Edmunds was born Aug 17, 1862, at Wales, Utah. • She was married to Edward Thomas Parry October 9, 1882, in the Salt Lake endowment house. They made their home in Manti until Mr Parry's death, 6 years ago . Since that time Mrs Parry has made her home in various parts of the state visiting with her children. LT. JAMES B. CRAPO VISITS HERE VIA PLANE Lt James B Crapo, an instructor at Fort Worth Flying field, Texas, flew a B-24 Liberator bomber in a cross country flight to Hill field Wednesday of last MRS ESTHER BOULTER FETED ON BIRTHDAY A group of ladies met at the home of Mrs Esther Boulter last week honoring her birthday. A po• luck lunch was furnished by the ladies in attendance including Mrs Beth Nelson and Mrs Alverda Passwater of Murray, Mrs Jennie Clark and Mrs Eva Olsen of Union, Mrs lone Poulson of Midvale; Mrs Mabel Stanton of West Jordan; Mrs Thomas of Midvale and Mrs Elizabeth Morrow and Mrs Otto Olsen of Sandy. Mrs J J Donovan of Los Angeles, arrived this week at the home of her brother and wife, Mr & Mrs Manasseh Smith of Murray, and will also visit with her neice and husband, Mr & Mrs Owen Bergman at their home in Sandy. The husband of Mrs Donovan, the late J J Donovan, who was well known to the residents of Murray and Midvale, being employed at Midvale for several years, died a month ago at his home in the coast city. Mrs Anna C Ras muss en, age 100 years, returned Thursday of last week to the home of her daughter, Mrs Olivia Claire of Sandy, following a 12 day visit with relatives at Kennilworth, Utah. Mrs Rasmussen was taken to Kennilworth by Mrs Laaron A Rasmussen and children of Sandy. Mrs lone Poulson of Midvale, and son Pvt Ernest Poulson of the army, . who is home on furlough, visited Thursday with Mr & Mrs Owen Bergman and family of Sandy. Mrs C R Green and son, Dennis, of Huntington, Utah, are spending 2 weeks as guests of Mrs Green's daughter, Mrs Wilma Rasmussen and children. S-Sgt Julius Lamb of the anny air corps has been promoted to his present rank at his station at Lincoln, Nebraska, according to word received here. His wife and small daughter, Julia Ann, are also residing at Lincoln. Mr & Mrs J T Ostler attended the dinner and social of Mr & Mrs Alva W Howell, given at their home in Salt Lake City Sunday evening, honoring their 25th wedding anniversary. Mrs Luella Voorhees of Manti, is visiting at the home of her daughter> Mrs J M Woodhouse, and family.
