Miss Donna Dastrup of Provo is spending the week with her cousm, Miss Marge Dastrup. Mr. and Mrs. Ancel Rich announce the birth of a daughter, Tuesday, July 9. Miss Vera Long returned home last Saturday after spending two weeks at Mullen, Idaho, at the home of her sister. Keith Jensen spent Saturday night and Sunday at the home of his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ike Wright of Murray~ Mr. and Mrs. George W. Jenkins visited friends and relatives in Idaho last week. Campbell Stapley and Howard Johnson are guests at the Lindell home. A party was given Tuesday afternoon by the First ward Relief society at the ward chapel, honoring Mrs. Florence Van Dam, who served as secretary for the Relief society but is now working on the stake board of the East Jordan stake Relief society. The following program was given : Address of welcome, First Counselor Mabel E. Nelson; reading, "Does It Pay to Raise a Large Family,'' Mrs. Allen Finlayson ; reading, "Little Mag's Victory,'' Mrs. Ada Stowe; original poem, honoring Mrs. Van Dam, by Mrs. Pearl Shaw. Mrs. Van Dam was presented with a gift, and the presentation speech was given by President Mamie Pierson. Remarks, Mrs. Florence Van Dam. Luncheon was served to 50 guests. C. R. Nickle of Springfield, Mo., is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Nichol. Mr. and Mrs. Newel Gailey and Miss Erma Gailey of Syracuse visited Mrs. Gailey's father, G. L. Ohlson, recently. Public sentiment leaned toward the defendant, but the law was against him and when the day of trial came the defe~dant, his counsel and friends held a consultation, and fearful of the consequences, they decided that the defendant should plead guilty and beg the court's mercy. The jury was charged by the court and retired. Presently it returned, and the foreman said: "We find the defendant not guilty." The judge viewed the jury in surprise and said: "Gentlemen of the jury, how be it? '!'his defendant pleads guilty and you flnd him not guilty?" The foreman answered: "Well, your Honor, the defendant is such a liar we can't believe him under oath." ' Cheap "Did you have to pay anything to that man you ran over the other day?"
