'fhe followin g recomm endation s on putting the car In shape tor winter are gleaned from an engineer ing bulletin: Clean Chassis First. The first step In the procedu re Is to clean the chassis, ~nglne and body, as dirt can hide many defects. Tighten all bolts 11n!l nuts. Check front wheels for proper alignment; remove caps and re-greas e; adjust wlleel bea1·lngs and replace ilub caps. Check steering gear for proper adjustmen t. Drain the old oil from the transmission and different ial and pour Into both about a quart of kerosene . At the same tlme put In the rafllntor 11 few handfuls of sal soda and then drive the <:ar two or three miles. The kerosene should then be drained from the transmis sion and differen tial and water dr~Jned from the radiator . A winter grade lubrican t recomm ended by the cur manufac turer should then be put In the transmis sion and dif· ferentlal . Inspect the rubber hose connecti ons. replacin g If necessaT'Y, after which the radiator should be fllll'd with clean water; and at the first appearance of cold weather an anti-free ze solution should be added. Next, drain oil from the engine; flush crankca se and put In a winter grade oil. If the oil filter bas been In use for 10.000 miles Install a new cartridg e. Examine Wiring. and clean <:ontact s; wiring Inspect starting motor and and r oil generato clenn the armatur es and brushes ; set generato r charging rate ahead for winter driving; check breaker points for proper spacing ; replace spark plugs If used more than 10,000 miles; If used less than this, clean them; aJjust gaps; clean battery with ammoni a water solution : tighten ter· minals and grease with vase line; In· spect water level and If gra vlty read· tng is low. recharge . Oil and grease all parts that require lt. Adjust brakes and reline It necessary. The motorist should also examine the top of his car and will do much to preserve It If he will spend a few minutes In going over the top with a good grade of top dressing . Many car manurar turers are now ~nipping cars with a summer and winter driving adjustm ent on the carburet ors and the proper adjustment to the carhm·e tor should be made at this time. The fuel an-d carburet or strainer s should also be taken out ann cleaned. With these simple but highly essential adjustm ents, a winter of carefree driving shoul$1 be enjoyed.
