Show I N h ------I Ml.dvale Juni·o·r HI·g otes ~------------------------------class teacher. The idea back of the work was to show the visitors the possibiliti es of large classes. Most of the instructo rs are handling large classes of their own, and it was their intention to gather a few ideas that would be of help to them. After the class work at the Midvale school, the shop teachers visited the Union school shop where they found some exception al work in electricity and concrete. Mr. Brady certainly show~d a well managed shop. At 4:30 the teachers enjoyed a delightful, satisfying chicken dinner at the Midvale school dining room. Miss Sutherlan d, the home-ma king teacher at Midvale, carried out the idea of a shop teacher's lunch with artistic place cards and little gumwood mallets with white birch handles as favors. The centerpie ce was a modernistic flower terrace filled with · wooden flowers. After the dinner and a short recess, the shop teachers worked over the shop outlines and sent to the state office several recomme ndations for changes in content and time. The following persons were present: Superviso r E. R. Beck, Principal E. E. Greenwoo d, Mr. Searl of Riverton, Mr. Peterson of Draper, Mr. Brady of Union, Mr. Anderson of West Jordan, Mr. Madsen of Sandy, and Mr. Dewey of Midvale. The shop teachers will meet next month at West Jordan. DISTRIC T SHOP TEACHE RS l\tEET At 2:30 Friday all the shop teachers from the various junior high schools of the Jordan district assembled in the Midvale school shop to watch a cla.ss in shop practice. There were 43 students present and at work during the demonstr ation. They pursued the following divisions of shop work: electricity , woodwor k, wood-fini shing, shop-draw ing, sheetmetal, ornament al-i:on, art-coppe r, and art-leathe r. Miss Peters' 2-A and 3-A were very interested in posing for a camera. They are interested to see how their pictures come out. The first grades are getting ready for Valentine day. They are just getting their boxes ready. The boys and girls in the 2-C grade are trying to improve their marching. Each week the children elect two policemen who take charge. The past week showed a marked improveemnt in marching under the control of Lee Beckstea d and Vivian Barton. Much interest has been shown in the little newspape r which comes to the room each week. It is written in words the students can untlerstan d. It tells us about the things that are happenin g in the world today. At the close of the half-year 2-C still boasts of nine students who have not yet been absent this year. They are Merlin Dimmick, Joyce Danks, oDnna Haskins, Helen Horne, Shirley Kitch Gwen Kitch, Annie Loranger , Evely'n Nicholson and Mildred Smith. SHORT TOPICS The district officials are thinking of having a shop teacher at Midvale during the summer months. The kinderga rten children are bringing books from home to add to their school collection . They have made a splendid library out of. theJ?. Spring surely . must be commg m the kindergar ten for the bird sii_Igs so much it is necessary to cover h1m. The platoon assembly Friday was an award assembly . The numbers were as follows: Violin solo, Darlene Downs; guitar solo, Margaret Camp. Awards were then made to honor students. It is always a delight to have parents visit our school. It is an unusual pleasure to have fathers come. Last Friday Mr. and Mrs. Durnford spent a whole hou~ _in the _shop du:ing the special actlv1ty per1od. The1r interest certainly carries over to their son. Arthur, who is one. of the outstandi ng shop students m the . school. Speaking of visitors, Mr. Jenkms visited his son, Edward, during a shop "l~ss last week. Come again, Mr. Jenkins. Patrons who have not seen the girls of the Glee club in . their new uniforms have a treat commg. These new costumes consist of a white sport satin dress trimmed with a red tie. A red "tam" tops of fthe costume an:d the girl splendidly . · This glee club IS to be one of the features at the art exhibit in February . At a meeting of the teachers of En.,.lish last Thursday , a great many set~ of exercises were distribute d for use among the students. These exercises were prepared by Han;>ld Thorpe, A. B., of the Sandy Juruor High school. They are designed to teach and clinch the fundamen tals of grammar . The speakers at the meeting. of English teachers were Superviso r E. R. Beck, Harold Thorpe of Sandy, w. E. Dewey of Midvale, Miss Rawson of the Jordan High school, and Miss Muir of West Jordan. Midvale's school basketbal l team continues to win. They outpointe d Riverton by a score of 65 to 22 last week. The 8-C grade has just been awarded the scholarsh ip pennant. Due to their vigorous efforts they ha':e raised their standard of scholarsh ip many points. The whole school gets much satisfacti on from their progress. The depressio n has so seriously affected some of the lives of our little kindergar ten folks that they were UI_Iable to continue to purchase the1r milk at the recess period. These deserving little people are being taken care of and get their milk daily. The funds are taken from the school unemploym ent allotment furnished by the teachers.
