PLANS MADE TO GET WOMEN OUT TO CASl BALLOT DVALE HIGH ECTS OFFICERS JUNIOR HIGH. HAS FOOTBALL TEAM I A report In Salt Lake City papers the day following the Republican convention in Salt Lake City, Saturday, Sept. 22, 1928 was amusing to say the least, in the face of the facts. When the matter of nominating County Commissioners was engaging the attention of the Convention and after the second ballot thereon, John A. Aylett, of Midvale, Utah, in· troduced a motion that the vote be made unanimous for the two leading contestants, Cowan and Lester. This motion was seconded and carried amid wild applause. Later, several minutes later, Parley White, who was also a candidate for Commissioner, made a short talk to the Convention, expressing his confidence in their choice, etc. The papers reported that Mr. White made the motion to cast the unani· mous vote of the convention for the two winners. Evedy member of the Midvale delegation and many other delegates besieged the Journal office demanding that we tell the truth about this matter. The fact of the matter Is that Mr. Aylett mounted a chair and in a voice easily heard throughout the hall made this motion. No one seems to deny this fact. The error must have been made by the Reporters of the Salt Lake City papers. The Journal takes pleasure in correcting this error in favor of Mr. Aylett, J. L. Meyers, a member of the Mid· vale delegation, who made the nomination talk for Mr. Aylett, informs us that he enjoyed reading the press reports wherein it was stated that "he was ~c nervous that he told the convention that his man was best because he was the last to be introduc- ed." This statement, of course, is in error. Mr. Meyers tried in vain to get the floor and succeeded in doing so only after three other candidates had been nominated. Then he approached the Chairman so closely that there was no other alternative than to give him a hearing. Mr. Meyers told the convention that he could give no reason for the attempt of the chairman to force him into last place unless he (the Chairman) considered his man (Mr. AyletY' the best man. However, no one except a Midvaleite would notice these trivial offenses. And we, here in Midvale, get a kick out of them, politically speaking. Don B. Colton Will Speak In Midvale Ward Congressman Don B. Colton representative from Utah, will speak at the Conjoint meeting of the M. I. A. of the Second ward, Sunday evening Sept. 30 in Go:lf's hall. Mr. Colton's speech will be along the line of the M. I. A. slogan for this season. l-le is an excellent speaker, an able statesiJian and everyone should deem this an opportunity and be present. The petition is filed supplementary to one formerly brought before the commission wherein John McFayden and L. B. Denning on behalf of themselves and associate Interests are seeking a certificate of public convenience and necessity to serve natural gas and fuel to consumers in the Salt Lake basin. In a former application the natural gas interests asked for a certifl.cate covering several cities and towns but Salt Lake and Midvale were omitted, as franchises had not at that time been obtained from these municipalIties. This brings before the utilities commission applications covering practically entirely the territory which the associated group of interests are seeking to serve with natural gas from the gas fl.elds in Wyoming and Colorado. The Midvale Expansion Club, at its regular September meeting, held at Go:lf's Hall Thursday evening, receiv· ed a communication from the State Road Commission that the proposed memorial arch to be erected across State Street at its Intersection with Center Street, pointing the way to Midvale City, stating that the Commission could not grant the request. They intimated that by so doing a precedent would be established and other towns might want to erect sim· Uar signs or arches over State street. While they may be merit in the con· tentlon of the Commission, yet it appears to ·the Journal that Midvale ought to have some means of inform· ing State Street traffic where to turn West, in case they desire to visit our fair city. It is also a matter of record that Brigham City has an arch of "Welcome To The City" over a State road. It appears that the location and stand ing of the petitioners makes some dif· ference.
