counties then onward to the south where it is cleft by the grand canyon of the colorado A BRIEF geological HISTORY the great mountain building forces so active during the close of the tertiary ae a age e worked on a scale along the northern portion of the mt baldy range the quartzite bedding capped with limestone was wa s profoundly fissured folded and faulted so great was the last named oc currance that the quartzite and limestone ent entirely rely disappeared under the more fe recent eruptive rock masses to the east of the sevier fault see accompanying ac compa nying maps and left the quartzite and thries limestone tone in the lof lofty ty precipice known ekno as the tie deer trail escarpment southwest of marysvale Marys vale from those yawning tl fissures enormous masses of rhyolite and birdseye birds eye porphyry oozed up from the e earths artlis melted interior aud and formed mountain masses thousands of feet feed deep again the unstable crust quivered with intense seismic forces the old and but partially healed wounds were opened and new fissures formed in the overlying eruptive mass and great dykes of highly mineralized porphyry now marathe mark the location and direction of those ancient rents the brief period of comparative quiet which succeeded the previous disturbances was continued on page 7 broken by another uplift of the range and along ca the central portion extending 0 from gold mountain south 11 a distance of some ten miles a great fissure was formed from froal the surface down to tho the region of liquid fire the mighty force which split the northern portion of the mt alt baldy range also formed lateral fissures extending tz basterl easterly y and westerly from the great central 0 0 el BEAVER if li M L TC T C atla 00 TI na t C T lines of easement casement for the vast mass of magma macrina 1 I seeking egress and from molten depths the hot bov gaseous mud flowed upward and formed great dykes of phonolite which today cheerily clinks under the feet of an occasional prospector while tile the eruption of the pho colite marks the last ous throes of nature in the mt baldy y region subsequent local fissuring of the occurred and in connection with other fissures already formed became channels for the upward and catteral lat teral how of gold and sil ver bearing solutions extinct craters fields of dark colored tra chite ridges of volcanic breccia dykes and chimneys of obsidian in the phonolite prove that local volcanic i forces forc es were nvere continued over a long period after the widespread wide spread eruptive activity had ceased THE PRE PRESENT SENT AND FUTURE geological conditions in evidence along the northern portion of the baldy range should remove every doubt as to its ultimate gre greatness buess and at their wildcat traps for unwary investors the an great mt baldy auldy 0 gold arold belt Is forging r to the front tile the magnificent record of tile annie laurie mine and mill in gold mountain buntain the vast bodies of cyan cyaniding id iding ing ore already exposed the examination and reports of numerous intelligent m mining inning men inen proclaim the fact that the annie laurio laurie is almost without a peer on this con the bluebird mine adjoining the annie laurie is also among CD the C great mines of utah in addition to the mines just mentioned there is a score or more of groups of mining claims in gold mountain that possess every indication of greatness in the vicinity af marysvale Marys vale there is that famous old time producer the deer trail with a million ind and a half dollars already blocked out the bully boy and webster lode wih its vast bodies of I 1 galena the B IV H and blue eagle groups that have been steady shippers since their discovery and numerous other promising properties every facility sol j or economical mining such as plenty of water and power timber cheap supplies an enterprising railroad the R G V W and telephone service investors can certainly ashfor ask for no more than tile the mra baldy gold belt can call furnish little or no prospecting has been done in ili the higher altitudes of the mt baldy range E especially s ally is this tile the case Avi within thin the phonolite belt where the intense and other conditions are such as to warrant the statement that nowhere in the entire west is there a more favorable field for careful and intelligent prospecting |
