Keep pesticides in their original containers. Wettable powders and dusts should then be placed in a plastic bag and State University Extension entomologist. If we try to go to an environment that is totally free of all pesticide residues, we are going to be paying one tremendous price for food. Maybe we had better be looking to measures that are restrictive rather than banning pesticides. There are some substitute chemicals available to replace DDT, banning that chemical has increased the cost of insect control, especially for the home owner and backyard gardener. Many of the substitute chemicals are more toxic to bees and other beneficial insects than was DDT. The ban on dieldrin and aldrin used to control a wide range of insect pests also has had wide effect. There are no equally effective substitute chemicals available at the same low cost. Though there may have been reasons for banning these two compounds, the results have made it more difficult to control some insect pests, especially those which feed on the roots of plants. The Environmental Protection Agency also plans to ban and heptachlor. Though heptachlor has been partially phased out, chlordane is still a commonly used pesticide. We can adjust to most of these actions. However, people should realize that most of the substitute chemicals are less effective and more costly. The banning of these chemicals will increase the cost of insect control and ultimately these costs will be passed on to the consumer. Yet, the decision is up to the people, if they want these pesticides banned, they must be willing to pay more for insect control, and ultimately more for many of their food products. Roberts is hopeful that sometime in the future scientists will develop new effective methods of controlling insects that are economical, effective and practically free of all pesticide residues. In the meantime, everyone should weigh what they are gaining and what they are losing when prohibitive measures are imposed. Good eyesight takes a time of caring. Fighters Fight Four Forest Fires Four fires were apparently started by elk hunters on the Manti-LaSa- l National Forest last Saturday and Sunday, according to Ranger Dick Allred. The summer has been extremely wet and everybody appears to feel the forest won't burn this year, Allred said. We are now having some of the driest weather conditions we have had all summer and hunters are urged to be extremely careful with fires during the elk and deer hunt. The largest of the four fires was near the Big Horseshoe below the Skyline Drive east of Ephraim. This fire burned 10 acres in spruce timber and was difficult to control because of Concessions Closed in Bryce Canyon Superintendent Charles A. Budge announced today that the concession operations within Bryce Canyon National Park have closed for the season. The facilities will reopen in early May 1976. The park remains open throughout the winter. North campground will remain open until winter weather forces closure. We hope our friends will continue to visit us as Bryce Canyon is an excellent winter activities area, Supt. Budge said. "We have excellent crosscountry skiing and snowshoeing trails. Anyone interested can contact our office and we can give them complete information. Budge said 1975 continues to be a record visitor year for Bryce Canyon. There have been 541 ,495 visitors so far this year. That is 42 above last year and sets an all time record. We hope to encourage Utahns and others to come and enjoy the Canyon this winter as our major view points will be kept open and the trails ready for skiing and snowshoeing," Budge added. the large volumes of fuel, windy conditions and inaccessibility. Crews from the Manti-LaSaFishlake, and Ashley National Forests and smokejumpers from McCall, Idaho were called to suppress this fire. Three other fires were also started during the weekend. One was located in Little Bear Canyon above Ferron. This fire was 14 acre in size and was suppressed by a crew from Price. The Seely fire started about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday and quickly spread through a grove of spruce trees. The fire was contained by Forest Service l, On-the-J- Training Programs ob moisture. Liquid formulations must be protected from freezing. Sprayers and dusters should be emptied, washed clean and dried. Oil where needed and stored in a dry place to prevent rusting. All pesticides should be under lock and key. Weed killers should be stored separately. Fumes could contaminate fungicides and insecticides and cause troubles next year. The cost of pesticides demands that this years "leftovers be properly protected and safely stored for next years use. Under lock and key assures that kids or pets cannot come in contact with them. Safe and proper storage prevents accidental poisonings. M. The Utah Department of Employment Security has received monies for training program.
