Show MANTI of MESSENGER Editorial Comment What is Quality Education? The Utah Education Associations Board of Trustees has voted to support the controversial school district reorganization proposal made recently by the State Board of Education. In endorsing the proposal, UEA Executive Secretary Daryl J. McCarty said, UEA support for the reorganization proposal is based on the likelihood that such action would markedly improve the quality of school programs in the districts affected. He said reorganization of small districts in many instances can provide more school offerings for students. He said consolidated schools can often provide better drama programs, intramural programs, orchestras and bands than smaller schools can offer. We challenge that hypothesis! Perhaps the quality of actors, basketball players, etc. in large schools is somewhat above that of smaller schools. But what has that to do with education? Its the opportunity to participate in such events that broadens and educates the student. And certainly that opportunity is vastly curtailed in a large school. Two of this writers children graduated from Skyline High School in Granite School District (the largest high school in the state), so we are somewhat acquainted with educational opportunities in large schools. Skyline with its approximately 2000 students has one basketball team, one football team, etc. So does Manti High School, Gunnison High School and North Sanpete High School. The bands of both schools put on about the same number of performances a year. Each school puts on a musical, school play or some other form of drama. Given these facts it should be evident that the opportunity to broaden ones education through activities is greatly enparticipation in hanced at a small school. So where does the improved education come from? The Utah Education Association has constantly crusaded (and rightly so) for smaller classes in order for there to be more rapport and opportunity for individualized instruction between teacher and student. This same principle holds true at the district level also. The larger the school, the less individualizing can be done. (My children at Skyline didnt know half the faculty and only a small percentage of the other students. This writer didnt know any of the none of them knew me). teachers, nor the principal--an- d How can the quality of education be improved under such conditions? to be improved by How is the quality of education riding two to three hours on a bus daily? (The education Ive seen going on while riding the bus is certainly the kind Im not anxious to have my children learn). Mr. McCarty said: This is often an emotional issue with citizens of small communities who dislike the idea of losing their own little school. Hes right there! This is an emotional issue -- - but not because we dislike the idea of losing our own little school. The reason we are emotional about it is because we are vitally concerned about the over-a- ll education of our children. One reason this editor moved away from Salt Lake was because he wasnt happy with the education his children were getting. We have seen no evidence (and we have studied the Boren report) that consolidation of the Sanpete County schools would enhance the education of our children. We believe that our children are educated the way wed like them to be. If the big city guys want their youngsters educated otherwise, thats their privilege. But its also our privilege to determine for ourselves how our children should be educated. And that for darn sure doesnt mean having the Utah State Legislature infringe on that right. years. Despite the most recent failure, a new campaign has been launched by some politicians and a few economists to impose controls again. Arch Booth, president of the Chamber of Commerce of the United States, recently pointed out why politicians, who know better, keep talking up wage and price controls. He said: They do it because they hope to create an illusion of doing something, and they hope to distract peoples attention from the real cause of inflation. Higher prices, which hurt us all, are not the cause of inflation. They simply are the most visible symptom. Therefore, it does no good simply to clamp a lid on prices while allowing cost pressures to build up. This is what happened when we experimented with Thursday, January 16, 1975 2 controls for months. Cost pressures were relieved somewhat when controls were lifted from some industries in 1973. Then, when controls for almost all other industries expired April 30, 1974, prices exploded in other industries. Industrial prices continued to rise rapidly. The net result was that in 1974--- a year of controls-- we had a substantial rise in prices. e inflation is to The solution to double-dig- it strike at the basic cause of inflation, which most economists recognize to be a decade of deficit spending and excessive creation of new money by the Federal Government. Worldwide food and energy shortages and other economic problems need attention as well. And we need to soften the impact of measures to assure that all share in the sacrifices without overburdening any single group. Controls are nothing more than patent medicine. They dont hold down prices, as our recent experience showed. Nor do they solve our food or energy shortages. Lets stop kidding ourselves. Five thousand years of failure should teach us something. It is almost unbelievable that a man (or sometimes a woman) possibly someone you know, will take a kitten out in this frigid winter world and abandon it to die of starvation and the agonies of pitiless cold! Some night, stay out of your warm home a few hours and feel what it would be like to be abandoned in the horror of a world of snow and ice, with pitiless cold gnawing deeper and deeper as pangs of hunger grow into an inexpressible agony and until some bitter night the little body lies cold and stiff in death.
