Ive loved my students like they were my nieces and nephews. Theres nothing more important to me than my family, whether at home or at school. Children have filled me with more pure joy, pride and inspiration than I could ever have imagined. And I want you to know that, before I admit to you the rest. Children have also filled me with more anger, frustration and unadulterated rage than I ever reached the end of my patience. There were times when I wanted to strike out against a smirk, or a sarcastic comment, or a defiant sneer I did not deserve. thought possible. Of all the adults Ive ever worked with, you would not find two of them w ho would describe me as a person with a temper. But ask my sons. On second thought, dont ask them. I know what theyd say. I jell. I lost my cool. I turn into a of hit. But Ive come so close. A I Troops in Bosnia unconstitutional We have no business having our troops over in Bosnia. That conflict over there has no threat to American lives liberty or property. That is, it was not until our president assumed power to send our troops over there. The Constitution does not give him power for any such move with our troops. Congress itself does not have the power to use our troops for any such action unless it threatens There are many hot spots like Bosnia. Should we be policing them all? Besides that, our troops are under U.N. command and the U.N. is not a peacekeeping force. They always go in with military force and usually support the wrong side. A lot of us have crossed the line. There are parents who dont have a partner to step in. There are parents who dont have a friend to call. There are children who dont have a guardian angel. Children bring out the best in us. But they bring out the worst in us, too. Because we care so much about them, because we fear for them, we become angry and confused when they wont do what we ask, and it can easily turn into a shoving match. And children are brilliant shovers. They know exactly what buttons to push to drive you up and over the wall. Gather all your strength and courage. Im not sure who the author is it had been. is the fable of The Little Red Here, with a little Hen: Once upon a time there was a little red hen who scratched around the barnyard until she discovered some grains of wheat. She called to her neighbors and said, If we plant this wheat, we shall have bread to eat. Who will help me? I g, Not I, said the cow. I, said the duck. Not I, said the pig. Not I, said the goose. Then, said the little red hen. I will plant it myself. And she did. And the wheat grew tall and ripened into golden Not grain. Then the little red hen asked, Who will help me harvest this wheat? Not I, said the duck. Its out of my classification, said the pig. Ill lose my unemployment compensation, said the goose. Then I will harvest it myself, said the little red hen. And she did. And at last came time to bake the bread. And the little red hen asked, Who will help me bake the bread? That would be overtime for me, said the cow. Id lose my benefits, said the duck. Im a dropout and never learned how, said the pig. If Im to be the only helper, that would be discrimination. said the goose. Then I will bake the bread myself, said the little red hen. And she baked five loaves of beautiful brown bread. As the hen had just baked five loaves of bread she held them up for her neighbors to see, and, quite predictably, they all wanted some. In fact, they all demanded their fair share. But the little red hen said, No, I can eat the five loaves myself. Excess profits, mooed the cow. Capitalist leech, quacked the duck. I demand equal rights. gobbled the goose. And the pig grunted and then hurriedly went off to paint unfair signs and march and picket around the barnyard. Well, as might be expected, the government agent heard about the barnyard incident and the little red hen, and dropped by to pay her a visit. The government agent told the little red hen, You must not be greedy. But said the little red hen. I earned the bread. I did all the work myself. Exactly, said the agent. That is the wonderful free enterprise system. Anyone in the barnyard can work and earn as much as heshe can, but under government regulations the productive workers must divide their product with the idle. And so it was, forced by government regulations, the little red hen shared her hard-earnbread with the others in the barned yard. And they all lived happily ever after. But the little red hens SHE NEVER BAKED neighbors always wondered why BREAD AGAIN!! Monday sure is a hard way to spend of your one-seven- th life.
