It should also act as a spur to local tanners who, with the best laud the sun ever smiled on and with abundance of water, have been content with half a crop and that more cockle than grain Furthermore, it ought to lend an incentive to the fulfillment of projects for the storage and distribution oi water. And, in addition to these benefits, it opens the .prospect, which some wide awake town will be quick to seize, that a convenient point in this great region can make lame and dollars for itself by its manufacture of suiierior dour. wheat-producin- g Now Sanpete county is the special grain producing district of Utah, and how much more necessary it is that we should make this our chief aim in competition. During a recent visit east the writer was surprised to learu of the high estimation in which all Utah products were held, especially was this so in the matter of p atoes and grain. We met a gentleman from Missouri who had tried our potatoes and thereafter he wanted no other and had increased his order for the Utah prod net from 11 bushels to two carloads per year, he, finding his friends so delighted with them that he formed affair and so a sort of consumed two carloads per year. It is equally so of our Utah grain, it has a widespread reputation of superiority all over the eastjj and even io Kc gland is it known. In tha crowded farming districts of Europe, the labor that is expended in increasing the yield of their poor land is almost ludicrous In comparison with the labor our farmers expend on their land. If, however, one of our enterprising farmers were to take a trip back to France, for instance where the cultivation of the soil has attained such a high state of perfection ws think they would have their eyes opened to the possibilities of our goodly land. The pitby remaksofthe Standard continue as follows : It is a common error to think that in the products of the soil. Utah has reached her limit. The statement has been made, and repeated by officials who ought to know better, that the good lands are all appropriated, and that for the remaining acres, broad and though they may be. there is no . well-locate- d hope ol obtaining water Such assert lonsare grossly misleading and in great pait umiue. A. tour through the Territory, or even a glance at the records in the land office, will quickly show that thousands of acres subject to home- and susceptible stead or ot remunerative cultivation, are still To be sure, the work unoccupied. ol irrigating themwill be more expensive than it has been with those alieady taken, and f they are still hopelessly dry the yield will not be so great. The result achieved bv Mr. Burton should serve as an encouragement- - His father did not find the acte which has just produced the eighty bushel crop well cultivated aud watered when he commenced wth it A lew years ago, it was as torbidding as many thousands of the acres at which people now turnup their noses, and which they pass by in searching out a more inviting homestead. Now we hope our county will itself with all such enterprisn, of our stteains Manti is m the first stages of a Hour famine which it is hoped will uot develop seriously. On Saturday Robt. H. Ford, an employee of the Temple in Salt Lake aud former manager of the Museum, fell from the upper tier of one of the circular windows in the Temple, a distance ol about thirty feet. At last account the accident was considered fatal. The attention of the citizens of Manti called to the fact that the City Council will meet in the City Hall at 9 oclock a. m. onMonda Febtuary 3rd, for the purpose of deeding Cemetery Lots, to those claiming the same. We think that this is a very important matter to those having beloved ones interred in the cemetery and should not be neglected, for once in possession ol a deed for that sacred ground the matter is forever settled and not subject to dispute. One would think, to judge by the remarks of Dr. Kenner on Tuesday evening relative to the removal of the county seat, that he was in favor of our retaining it here in Manti. Of course tho, we cant alwavs tell he may want to see it given to Mavfield as he seems partial to this southern locality. Stanley, it is said, sees fine prospect lor railways in Africa. According to his estimates 800 miles could be laut down for $17,000,000.
