They tell of irregularities m the seasons preceding or Inflowing the shuck, of sudden- gusts of wind by sudden calms, of violent rams at unusual seasons, or in countries where such phenomena are almost unknown, of a reddning of the suns disc, haziness in the air often continued for mouthy, and similar phenomena. But these aie so irregular in their appearance, and have been so seldom observed associated with more than a single ealthquake, that, in the absence of any decided reason to the contrary there seem good grounds for believeing they have no real connections with the earth-- , quake. It is different with noises, which frequently precede, accompany, or succeed the occurence of e.utnquakes, or some of. the shocks of them. They are undoubtedly intimately connected with the shock, yet earthquakes occur, even of the greatest violence, which are unaccompanied bv any sound whatever. Different descrip tions have been given of these subterra- nean noises. In some earth juakes, they are likened fo chains pulled about, increasing to thunder; in others, the sound is like the rumbling of carriages, growing gradually louder, until it equals the loudest artillery; or like heavy wagons running- avvav upon the road; or distant thunder; or like the hissing produced t by the quenching of masses of iron in water. All theorists are agreed as to, the connections between volcanoes and earththe quakes; that they are produced byexistsame subterranean agency. The ence of molten matter in the interor of in all the earth is the starting-poin- t theories, but a complete and satisfactory solution of the entire problem yet to be given.
